Mediterranean Diet Adherence and Genetic Background Roles within a Web-Based Nutritional Intervention: The Food4Me Study. - PubMed - NCBI 12/12/2017

🍽️Is Mediterranean diet a "magic potion" for lipid traits? Perhaps. But not for all🤔

Recent study shows that this popular nutrition plan really does improve weight, waist circumference and glucose, but total cholesterol improvement on the Mediterranean diet depends on the person's genetic risk score (GRS).

Genetic risk score is the sum of person's risk alleles for markers from the selected genetic panel. In this study the GRS was calculated for high BMI predisposition panel. It was shown that low GRS (which means lower predisposition to high BMI) is associated with cholesterol improvement on the Mediterranean diet, whereas high GRS - is not.

Vitamin B12 has the most complex structure among all of the vitamins.
The human body requires vitamin B12 for DNA molecules creation, for the synthesis of the proteins building blocks (amino acids) and the processing of fats and carbohydrates. Vitamin B12, together with vitamin B9, is needed for a hematopoiesis, and the growth and development of the body. A deficiency of B12 leads to an anemia.
🔬Common variants in FUT2 gene are associated with levels of vitamin B12. For example, rs602662 G carriers have lower concentrations of cellular and plasma vitamin. Poor food intake in this case often leads to an anemia.

👨‍⚕️Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition caused by a clot formation in veins, leading to the redness, swelling and possible detachment of the clot. Detached clot goes through the vascular system and may cause arteries embolisation - a life-threatening event.

🕵️‍♂️DVT may have a genetic background and be linked to some mutations in the coagulation proteins genes. One of the frequent causes of DVT is Factor V mutation (or Leiden mutation). People with rs6025 A variant have 3.5-4x higher risk of thrombosis, which is even higher, up to 6x, in women taking oral contraceptives. Homozygous variant (AA) means 11x higher risk.

💊Anticoagulation therapy is often used for people with Leiden mutation to prevent dangerous coagulation events, but because of the side effects this therapy is possible only under a strict doctor's control.

🔬People with DVT should check their rs6025 genotype to learn about their F5 and possible cause of thrombosis.

Counting coffee cups with genes:) 01/11/2017

One cup of coffee makes you a superhero, but two turn you into a sleepless zombie? 😵
Perhaps you are sensitive to caffeine. Such a sensitivity can manifest itself as insomnia, agitation and anxiety after consuming caffeine-containing products. Follow link to read about.

Counting coffee cups with genes:) Being sensitive to caffeine may present signs of insomnia in some people and make them feel unwell sometime after they have consumed coffee-reach drinks. Sensitivity is linked to the genes encoding caffeine metabolizing enzymes and caffeine receptor proteins, CYP1A2 and ADORA2A.

Saliva sampling: simple and painless👨‍🔬
Modern lab genotyping analysis uses a saliva sample to get a person's DNA. Why is it possible?

Our saliva has buccal cells, and DNA is extracted from them. All our cells has same genetic information, so buccal epithelium is OK to get all necessary for genotyping. This means you don't need to pass blood collecting for modern DNA testing, you just need to spit into a collecting kit, following simple collecting rules📝

You and peanuts: friends or foes? 22/10/2017

It is now clear, that many autoimmune diseases have a strong genetic background. However, genetic factors leading to a food allergy are larger in number. More about peanut allergy genes in our blog 👨‍🔬

Gene you need to know about: AMPD1 15/10/2017

AMPD1 encodes adenosine monophosphate
deaminase 1,an enzyme involved in a muscle energy replenishment.🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️
This gene is linked to an exersice intolerance, and near 10% of people carry unfavorable variant.

Gene you need to know about: AMPD1 Variants of AMPD1 gene may cause a condition called adenosine monophosphate deaminase deficiency, which causes exercise intolerance because of the lack of energy within the muscles, this might carry pain or fatigue after exercising.

Gluten-free or not? 10/10/2017

Recent study shows, that up to 90% of Canadians with gluten intolerance don't know they have this condition (BMJ Open, October,2017). 🚫🍞🍺
Gluten intolerance is genetically linked disease, so DNA testing may help to reveal unfavorable markers. Read more in our genetic blog: https://www.inheritome.com/blog/gluten-free-or-not.html
