Surprise, surprise! One of the rarest finds in earth science is an ammonite fossil discovered during oil well drilling in the Algerian Sahara. What’s really astonishing is that this fossil was found in the Upper Carboniferous era, specifically the Tournaisian age, which lasted between 358.9 and 346.7 million years ago. Ammonites are usually used as markers of the Jurassic to Cretaceous age, making this discovery even more remarkable. The coating of pyrite mineral adds a touch of beauty to it and gives it its golden look.

من أندر الاكتشافات في علوم الأرض أحفورة الأمونيت التي تم اكتشافها أثناء حفر بئر لنفط في الصحراء الجزائرية. والمدهش حقًا هو أن هذه الحفرية وجدت في العصر الكربوني العلوي، وتحديدًا العصر التورنيزي، الذي كان ما بين 358.9 و346.7 مليون سنة ماضية. عادة ما يتم استخدام الأمونيت كعلامات لتحديد الزمن ما بين العصر الجوراسي إلى العصر الطباشيري، مما يجعل هذا الاكتشاف أكثر روعة. كما أن معدن البيريت يضيف لمسة من الجمال إليه ويمنحه مظهره الذهبي.

Gypsum
gypsum is a rock that is composed from calcium sulfate dihydrate CaSo4.2H2O, and known for its softness (Mohs hardness scale=3), and also presents a high solubility in the water.
drilling oil wells while passing a gypsum formation could be challenging due to its characteristics that induce bit clogging and well instability specially when we use water based mud.
for this drilling mud must be treated and watched carefully to achieve an effective drilling operation.

Lower Silurian shales: are organic rich shales with TOC up to 17 %, which makes it the main source rock for the Ordovician reservoirs in Saharien platform, during the drilling operation it gives positive gas show, because shale creates certain porosity between its layers, there where the hydrocarbon is adsorbed.
As a result : Silurien shales become a favorite as an unconventional reservoir using the hydraulic fracturation method for exploitation.

Fluoroscopy is one of the methods of observation that gives primary information about reservoir content, by exposing the sample to ultraviolet light, the hydrocarbon inside the rock sample reflects light in deferent colors, the interpretation of reflecting area ratio and its color define which type of hydrocarbon embedded and its amount, lighter color means lighter type of hydrocarbon, darker color means heavier hydrocarbon.
The core sample in the photo expose blue stains that means this reservoir has a gas bearing.
Note: there is also indirect method of inspection includes a chemical reaction then observing the filtrate.

Anhydrite or calcium sulfate is one of the evaporic minerals, which are shallow sediments, that causes calcium contamination to fresh water based mud during drilling, however, it has other cractrestic that makes it useful in reservoir exploitation, such as its fibrosis crystallization mode that makes a seal to represent a cap rock, and its geomechnical aspect that shows low plasticity that makes it favourite to set casing point.
note: anhydrite are the white dots.

The beauty of rocks can't be unseen under microscope, there when geologists enjoy a deep conversation with samples, unveiling the secrets of millions of years.
