URBAN BEING Anatomy & Identity of the City Appealing graphics analyse the structures of cities in a refreshing way. In order not to be restricted by arbitrary political boundaries, the author creates an anatomy that allows cities to be compared on different scale levels. In doing so, the city becomes an urban being that comes to life through humans. The analysis shows the influence of the city structure on the behavior of the inhabitants, or in other words: the anatomy of the city influences its identity.

People and goods are urban nutrients that flow through traffic arteries. The course and quality of these arteries define the typology of the urban cell, the smallest scale of the book. Depending on the cell type, subcentres, residential or financial districts are created. This makes the urban cell an urban planning tool. The different scales include the urban nucleus, the urban being and the surrounding of the nearest cities. Large metropolises and small cities are different within their context. The bigest scale shows the macroregions. They are collections of cities stretching over thousands of kilometers. The graphics shed a new light on how we perceive our city.
