NEW GROUND

A big part of this project is to literally propose a new ground floor - not just from an architecture but also urban planning standpoint. This diagram shows the existing (purple) and proposed (blue) street sections around the site. The heavily vehicle oriented streetscape is transformed into a more pedestrian friendly experience, using changes in elevation and de-densified car traffic.

Floor plan of the main annex buildings showing connection points between existing and proposed. The 52,000 sqft new building complex provides room for the various program requirements of the Academy of Fine Arts (Stuttgart, Germany), while conserving lots of valuable outdoor space.

NEW GROUND

New Ground is our proposal for a group of extension buildings for the Akademie der Bildenden Kuenste (State Academy of Fine Arts) in Stuttgart, Germany. In combination all new buildings introduce a circular path around the academy, working with the topographic challenges of the site.

NEW GROUND

The FAR of the extension is concentrated at the main annex along the West (right in this image) to allow for lower buildings closer to human scale within the campus, while still providing enough room for workshops and event spaces. One of those lower building hosts the Arena of Arts, North of the campus. The Arena is located on the roof of the new building housing the seminar rooms, workshops, library, and multipurpose room. It is a new meeting and creation space for students. Its height allows residents and visitors to visually access the Arena of the Arts.

NEW GROUND

The second complex of our proposed group of annex buildings for the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. The proposal uses the unexploited space of the academy below grade. Through excavation of those mis-used areas, the buildings of the academy re-connect to the pedestrian life and allow for a dialogue with the street. The proposed buildings provide home for the program requirements of the fine arts academy and connect into the new visitor center of the Weissenhof Siedlung.
