Melitta Bentz war 35 Jahre alt, als sie das erste Mal mit verschiedenen Filtermethoden experimentierte, um den Kaffeesatz vom Kaffee zu trennen. Bis dato verwendete man einen Trichter, in den man Löschpapier legte. Dieses musste man zuvor jedoch aufwändig ausschneiden. Bentz hatte eine einfachere Idee. Sie legte das Löschpapier ihres Sohnes auf den Boden einer durchlöcherten Konservendose. In ihrem Freundeskreis stieß diese Technik schnell auf Begeisterung, weshalb sie beschloss das ganze zu vermarkten. 1908 wurde das Unternehmen "M. Bentz, Marschallstraße 31" mit einem Eigenkapital von 73 Pfennigen gegründet. Am 20. Juni 1908 bekam Melitta Bentz das Patent für den Kaffeefilter. Heute ist das Unternehmen international erfolgreich und wird von Melitta Bentz' Urenkel geführt.
