„Nuremberg: One of the most unique places for engaging with history“?

That’s how the city itself – and the Nuremberg Convention and Tourist Office ( ) – describes Nuremberg. But what does someone who has spent his academic career studying history, N**i Germany and the Holocaust think?

We asked American historian Professor Michael Bryant for his perspective on Nuremberg as a place to encounter history – and what makes the city’s relationship with its own past so distinctive.

Professor Michael Bryant is an American historian specializing in N**i Germany, the Holocaust and the history of war crimes. He teaches as part of the international Summer School “From Nuremberg to The Hague”, which has been bringing students to Nuremberg for many years to explore the Holocaust, the Nuremberg Trials, international criminal law and the ways Germany has dealt with its N**i past. We at Hotel Drei Raben have had the pleasure of welcoming the professors of the Summer School as our guests for many years – giving us the opportunity for conversations like this one.

Nuremberg: A Unique Place for Engaging with History

For centuries, it was a city of emperors and Imperial Diets. During the Renaissance, artists, inventors, and craftsmen such as Albrecht Dürer helped make Nuremberg one of Europe’s great centres of innovation, knowledge, and creativity.

The 20th century added a much darker chapter. Once the stage for the N**i Party Rallies, the city today is known as a City of Peace and Human Rights. From the former N**i Party Rally Grounds to the Way of Human Rights and the Memorium Nuremberg Trials, Nuremberg openly confronts its past and continues an ongoing dialogue about what this history means today.

Many people come to Nuremberg because they are curious about how the city deals with the burdens of its past. Visitors from around the world are interested not only in the historical sites themselves, but also in how Nuremberg approaches these difficult chapters today and how it chooses to use and interpret these places.

Today, the city continues to explore how the architectural remains of the former N**i Party Rally Grounds should be used in the future. Projects such as the new State Theatre in the former Congress Hall reflect this ongoing process. These questions are actively debated within the city, and there is no single answer. In this way, Nuremberg continues to develop its culture of remembrance for future generations.

What surprises students most about Nuremberg and Germany? Professor Michael Kelly from Creighton University explains. During their Summer School “From Nuremberg to The Hague” we had the pleasure of speaking with Michael Kelly about Nuremberg: A Unique Place for Engaging with History🧐
