S***m whale calves are normally nursed for 2-3 years - in some cases even up to 5 years! 🍼🐳
The extended nursing period is linked to their large brain, slow development, and complex social structure.

This is much longer compared to most other marine mammals!
• Dolphins: usually < 1 year
• Humpback whales: ~6–12 months
• S***m whales: 2–3+ years 🐋
During the first 12–18 months, milk is the primary food source.
From around 1–2 years of age, calves begin to eat solid prey (mainly small squid) in addition to nursing. 🦑

This was such a playful little s***m whale - he kept swimming back to us again and again 🐋🥰
If you don't disturb, don't chase them and be calm, that's what happens 😍

The scars on the head of this jung s***m whale are from the fights with giant deep sea squid - their main prey. 🦑
S***m whales are the largest toothed predators on Earth - and if they are in the mood to play with you during their surface intervals, it's magical 🥰🥰

We had little wind and heaps of orcas around, so I used the chance and quickly started my drone.

What happened next, was crazy🔥
We found three humpback whales resting and chilling on the surface. With no other boats around, we decided to stay away as well and only gently swim over to them for minimal disturbance. 🐋
We quietly went into the water and then 👉 orcas 🤩
This little family appeared out of nowhere and gave us a super nice surprise 🤗🤗😍
