The challenge is no longer building renewable power.
According to the International Energy Agency, the constraints are increasingly grid connections, supply chains, financing, and above all, permitting processes.
Demand is not the issue.
By 2030, global renewable electricity capacity is expected to double. Another 4,600 gigawatts will be added, roughly equivalent to the combined power generation capacity of China, the European Union, and Japan today. Nearly 80% of that growth will come from solar.
A solar project can be built in one to five years.
The transmission line needed to connect it to the grid often takes five to fifteen years, from planning and permitting to completion.

Southeast Asia’s energy system is changing fast — and quietly rewriting the region’s import bill.
Since 2015, renewables, electrification and efficiency have avoided $30 billion in fuel imports. What began as diversification is now a measurable economic shift.

After every major heatwave the same question returns: was it caused by climate change. That instinct oversimplifies how weather works. Heatwaves still form from familiar atmospheric patterns — but now they occur on a higher baseline.
For the April 2026 heatwave in northwestern India and Pakistan, that baseline shift can be measured.

This figure, published by S&P Global, remains a projection, not a measurement. The Asia-Pacific region is at the forefront.
When growth shifts, the pressure points shift first. In fast growing economies, electricity demand is the earliest signal — rising faster than clean generation can keep up.
In India, Vietnam and the Philippines, that’s not a forecast. It’s the operating reality.

Some stories are measured in data; others are understood through narratives. A solar plant floating on a lake tells one truth. A grid connection that takes longer to approve than the plant it serves took to build tells another.

Add to that nearly two billion people relying on grids that fail daily. When the power drops, the fallback is kerosene, a diesel generator, or years of waiting. All costly, all unreliable.
Ember's analysis finds that solar + storage is already cheaper than the fossil generation planned in these regions. Abundant resource, clear economics — yet deployment lags. Nowhere is the gap between a plan and a power plant wider.
In these markets, private capital often makes the difference: impactplus-investing.com

In the sunniest regions, that share rises to 99%, according to Ember’s Solar and Battery Atlas. For decades, the gap between noon and night was the strongest argument against solar.
Storage rewrites that story. It captures the midday surplus and releases it when the grid calls. The debate shifts entirely: no longer clean versus fossil, but available versus unavailable — the only distinction a grid ultimately cares about.

The most common objection to solar is land. The idea that panels mean taking space from agriculture or nature.
Ember’s calculation excludes both. This is technical potential, not a deployment plan.
Which means the real question isn’t whether space exists. It’s which space gets used first.

150 gigawatts of installed capacity. 50 added in twelve months.
India is building at a pace few anticipated. But the real investment opportunity isn't in generation — it's in what comes next: the grids, storage, and transmission infrastructure that get clean power to the places that need it most.
That gap is where impact-oriented capital has the clearest window right now.
