What happens when churches built to bring people together lose their original purpose?

For its 30th anniversary, Manifesta 16 Ruhr invites visitors to explore this question by transforming deconsecrated post-war churches across Bochum, Essen, Gelsenkirchen and Duisburg into spaces for contemporary art, dialogue and new forms of community.

From 21 June to 4 October, discover one of Europe's leading nomadic contemporary art biennials in an extraordinary architectural setting.

At the heart of the detached-house development of Denham Court, the 5.5-hectare Willowdale sports ground overlaps with a landscape used by Indigenous peoples for up to 10,000 years. The early twentieth-century warehouse preserves its solid brick presence at the street corner, characterized by ornamental lintels and deeply set window openings. Crowning the historic structure, two contemporary floors are enclosed by a perforated aluminum façade that softly illuminates the building after sunset.

At Thoravej 29 in Copenhagen, a former building is reimagined as a living material system. Instead of demolition waste, almost everything is reused on site, with 95% of components transformed into new functions. Ceiling slabs become staircases, doors and flooring are turned into furniture, and partition walls are reprocessed into new surfaces. Guided by the principle “what is removed stays in the building,” the project turns demolition into design. Set on a forest clearing near Lake Tahoe, surrounded by Jeffrey pines and boulders, this family home by Mork-Ulnes Architects blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings. The dark stained timber façade echoes the colour of the tree bark, while the staggered volumes minimize the impact on the terrain. For the 25th anniversary of the Serpentine Pavilion series, Lanza Atelier has designed the 2026 pavilion. Titled “a serpentine,” the project creates an open public space for exchange, programming, and collective experience in Kensington Gardens. At the Concéntrico Festival in Logroño, the Plaza Salón, a heavily trafficked roundabout, was temporarily transformed into a communal bath. Leopold Banchini Architects framed a fountain with a timber structure containing changing rooms, a steam bath, and a cold plunge pool. Amid traffic noise, an intimate space at a human scale emerged, built from reused materials. After one week, the installation was dismantled, but the idea remains: public space can be reimagined.

Poetic, technical, colorful, and climate conscious. The speakers at the DETAIL Facade Congress 2026 demonstrated how contemporary building envelopes are becoming far more than protective skins.

From the glass roof tile facade of the Museum Historische Oberamteistraße in Reutlingen to the boldly expressive solar facade of the H1 high rise in Zurich, the projects revealed diverse approaches to innovation. Other highlights included vibrant prefabricated brick facades, structural exoskeletons, integrated building services, and adaptive reuse strategies that significantly reduce material consumption.

A recurring theme throughout the congress was clear: innovation is not only about aesthetics. The facade of the future must combine beauty, performance, sustainability, and technical intelligence. As the closing discussion emphasized, the most compelling solutions emerge when complex requirements are transformed into clear and meaningful architecture.
