Our project last year resulted in the creation of a group in the village of Waifoi to work together to advance community-based tourism in Raja Ampat's Mayalibit Bay. Reef Guardian is proud to continue supporting this group and their goal to preserve and share the cultural traditions of the Ma'ya people

Six years ago, we started working on coral reef conservation in Indonesia.
What we learned: protecting reefs is not just about nature: it’s also about people and livelihoods.
Together with local partners in Raja Ampat, we have built small structures:
a transport system, a local shop, and first market access for locally produced goods.
It’s still small, around €28,000 across four projects, but already over 100 people are directly involved.
This year, we’re continuing this work with new projects, including a cultural initiative and a sustainable tourism concept.
Curious to see where this journey leads.
Thanks to everyone who supports and contributes to this work
What’s new at Reef Guardian e.V.?
We’ve launched a new project: “Tales of Mayalibit.” The goal is to preserve the traditional stories of the Ambel/Ma‘ya community by collecting, transcribing, translating, and curating them into a dedicated storybook.
This project directly contributes to safeguarding language and cultural heritage, while also making these stories accessible beyond the region.
An initiative that highlights how closely environmental protection and cultural identity are connected.
