Bryan Eubanks (b. 1977, US) develops his music through solo work and collaboration. Since 1999 he has participated in many short and long term projects, and regularly presents his work internationally. Continually active in a variety of contexts: improvisation; composing electronic and acoustic works for small ensembles, solo instruments, computers, and electronics; organizing and curating concerts for other artists; building electronic instruments. He currently lives in Berlin.

Kaffe Matthews pioneering music maker who works live with space, data, things, and place to make new electroacoustic composition, her past has taken her through things such as midi violin, theremin, star maps, NASA scientists, sharks, children, solo walks and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra to create a massive body of works for sites such as concert halls, city streets, basement clubs, radio, galleries, deserts, living rooms, and the human body. The physical experience of music is also key to her approach so she also invents unique interfaces such as the sonic armchair, the sonic bed and a range of sonic bikes which offer new paths into composition for makers, and ways in to listening for wide ranging audiences worldwide.

Today she is focused on dangerous unknowns improvising with space, audience and a new modular instrument, the Ripley. A noise filter system designed through the 12 Gates of alchemical discoveries made by the 15th century alchemist George Ripley, backfeeding and live sampling throughout.

LABOR SONOR ° Steffi Weismann, Bryan Eubanks & Kaffe Matthews, Burkhard Beins & Tony Elieh

ZONE NULL
Tony Elieh - bass guitar, live-electronics
Burkhard Beins - bass guitar, live-electronics

The Berlin-based duo Zone Null unites Tony Elieh and Burkhard Beins for an unusal encounter of two bass guitars and a variety of analog and digital live-electronics. While for Elieh the bass guitar has always been a main focus of his musical activities, as an improviser and namely with Karkhana, Calamita and the Lebanese indie rock band Scrambled Eggs, Beins only recently expanded his already wide range of extended percussion, experimental electronics and sound art by co-founding the Krautrock-Noise band Slurge as their bass player. The sonic fiction of Zone Null evolves and florishes on the broad musical horizon these two gentlemen have in common, ranging from musique concréte and contemporary composition via improvised and experimental music to electronic, post-punk and avantgarde rock.

LABOR SONOR ° Steffi Weismann, Bryan Eubanks & Kaffe Matthews, Burkhard Beins & Tony Elieh

We are more than happy to have Steffi Weismann presenting her work „Generation S“ at Kunsthaus KuLe. Steffi is a vital part of the Berlin scene since many, many years, member of the Maulwerker ensemble and works within the field of sound art and performance.

Steffi Weismann: Generation S

(2018, 21')

„Generation S“ is audiovisual piece that reflects the relationship between nature and technology over almost five generations. Acoustic spaces and specifically amplified sounds immerse in an abstract microcosm and yet remain close to our physical existence and perception. How does a 10 year old girl imagine life of earth in the future and how are scientists dealing with multi-resistant germs? The timing and process of the composition is characterized by cicles and unpredictable twists. Sounds of amplified brain waves or electrostatically charged hair are part of performative actions with microphoned and microscopized objects. With her live voice, the performer creates laryngeal vibrations, breaths or hissing noises that create synergies between machine, creature and plant, and mix with field recordings and live material sounds.

T O N I G H T

We are ...still celebrating 25 years of Labor Sonor at our home-base at Kunsthaus KuLe. We are very happy to have a trio set Margareth Kammerer, Rebecca Lane & Deborah Walker.

Margareth Kammerer is an avant-garde musician, singer and composer. In her artistic work she is focussing on form and sound. She works solo and in various ensembles and projects with other musicians. Her performances include her own compositions, interpretation of works from other musicians as well as music for theatre, film, and radio plays.

Rebecca Lane is a musician who explores intonation as a social and perceptual practice, focusing on just/rational intonation and the relational aspects of sounding/activating this material with others. Her practice is informed by ongoing relationships with composers (such as Catherine Lamb), collaborations (like distances bending with Clara de Asís) and within various duos and ensembles (including Harmonic Space Orchestra), utilizing various flutes (in particular, Kingma System quarter-tone flutes).

Italian cellist Deborah Walker is a new music performer and improviser based in Berlin. She is interested in multiple forms of music creation related to the exploration of sound and interaction with other art forms.

Name Change is the duo of Neo Heckler and Stellan Veloce.

Neo Hülcker is a composer performer whose work focuses on music as anthropological research in everyday life environments. Their compositions evolve as situations, performance-installations, actions and interventions, and deal with digital subculture (like ASMR), childhood, human-animal-relations, q***r practice and cultural hacking.
They are a part of the Y-E-S collective, who publishes music dealing with performativity, temporality, sound as physical experience and the cultural frames of concerts (y-e-s.org).

Stellan Veloce is a Berlin-based Sardinian multi-instrumentalist and composer. They studied cello at the Cagliari Conservatory and composition at the Universität der Künste Berlin and the California Institute of the Arts.

Their music focuses on timbral research, iteration and modulations of sound densities, integrating composition with improvisation and band playing. Their background in traditional Sardinian music is a important subliminal inspiration of their work.

Viola Yip, born and raised in Hong Kong, now based in Berlin, is an experimental composer, performer, improviser, sound artist and instrument builder.
