What the *fund* are we talking about??
A couple of days ago we kicked off the Fund Development Learning Journey, our year-long peer to peer opportunity designed to explore why and how to build a robust, flexible, and future-oriented fund development strategy for your organisation, drawing on the collective experience of hashtag across Europe.
As we are gathering snippets and insights of our first meeting with Orla Black from Community Foundation Northern Ireland, we realised something: we may not all be aligned on some of the different types of funds out there.

That’s the simple recipe Community Foundation Wales followed to shift its funding practice — catching what its communities want and serving them better.
Back in 2019, it launched a consultation with grantees to better understand their needs. The results were strikingly consistent:
➡️ Short-term, project-only funding was holding them back from delivering on their missions.
In response, the foundation rethought its approach — introducing support for core costs and multi-year funding.
In this interview, Andrea Powell, Director of Programmes (and Deputy Chief Executive), shares insights from their journey, the challenges along the way, and the opportunities that lie ahead.
