What is your experience with those email marketing statements?
Cause at the risk of sounding like a broken record...
It depends.
Your subscribers are unique to you.
Your business might be serving people in multiple time zones.
You know what works for your audience best (or at least, so I hope).
So please don't be discouraged by statements like that.
Test everything and ask for feedback from your subscribers.
Cater to them, not to the statistics.

Here's something I hear a lot -
"How do I make sure that I finish my email with a strong call to action? I write my emails and by the end, I forget all about it!"
Can you relate?
Well, to that I have two answers:
1. Not every email needs a call to action, or links, or whatever. You can also nurture your list without those all the time!
2. Start by writing your CTA first, then continue as you were. Odds are - your email would take a shape that makes a lot more sense now!

Two weeks ago I went through a rough dental surgery... the kind of surgery that later fills your mouth with criss-cross, over and under stitches that can drive even the most serene person totally insane.
Yesterday I finally got those damn things out.
But as I sat in the vinyl-covered dentist's chair yesterday, I got some unexpected news that rocked my world.
Why am I telling you this?
Cause on Friday, I'm going to tell the whole story in my weekly newsletter (without the disgusting parts, I promise!).
More importantly, I'm going to share my conclusions from this little devastating incident and why it matters to *your* business, and suggest some quick fixes that you can apply to your email copy immediately.

Growing up with an architect as a father, I kept hearing this again and again -
The strongest shape in the world is a triangle.
A table with 3 legs would always be more stable than one with 4 legs.
Which is why when I'm talking about the pillars of ethical email marketing, I'm always mentioning these three:
Transparency, consent and storytelling.
Transparency: be clear about your intentions, set the expectations for your subscribers right from the get-go, and be as open as you can be about your goals, deadlines and the reasons behind doing what you're doing.
⟹ Guiding question: Would I tell that to someone who just set next to me on the train/plane?
Consent: use the permission your subscriber gave you for good causes. Give your reader the choice to make informed decisions, whether it's buying from you, opting out of your list/sequence at any point, or anything else for that matter.
⟹ Guiding question: How would I like my information and the access to me to be used by someone else?
Storytelling: build trust via providing value, on repeat. We're all storytellers, that's something that's inherently embedded in us all. And when it comes to investing money - we only do that when we know, like and trust someone enough to actually open our wallets. So tell your stories, show up, and always make it about your reader and how you can help them first.
⟹ Guiding question: What do I need to see, and how many times, to trust someone enough to buy from them?
Liked that post? I'd love it if you share it in your story, so more people can see it!

How are my new quiz and the wonderful woman on the right connected?
This is my best friend in the whole wide world, .salomon, and she has one of the sharpest minds I know.
We've known each other for more than half of our lives by now, and our relationship is only getting stronger by day - yes, even though we live on different continents and will soon have a 6-hour time difference between us!
So when I wanted to create something new for my business and connect with more like-minded business owners, one thing was clear as day to me -
I'm going to call her, we're going to have a brainstorming session, and we'll think of something together.
After an hour of talking and throwing ideas up in the air, my new quiz was born. And I owe this idea to Shelly and to her remarkable skills.
This quiz lets you self-audit your email list and see where and how you can seize some of those unattended opportunities in your business.

Here's why this post matters to you as a business owner -
You can do better than this!
If you think any of these tactics are disrespectful or sleazy, flip it and reverse it (yes, this is absolutely a Missy Elliott reference).
But you can definitely work around those and do email marketing ethically...
Your way, without playing tricks on your subscribers.

Time is running... where?
This is one of the easiest ways to rush your subscribers to take action...
I'm talking countdown timers, baby!
It's a common practice in email marketing - pop in a countdown timer and see how people feel a greater sense of urgency to get your offer.
So when is it meaningless?
I see wayyyy too many businesses that still put timers in their emails when there's no actual urgency.
This false scarcity is insulting to me as a potential customer, especially when some of those businesses extend their sales beyond the deadline they determined themselves!
Wait, is time not linear anymore?
I have a love-hate relationship with countdown timers... Do they work? Well, of course they do!
But do you *have* to put them in your emails? I'm glad you asked!
Let's shift the perspective and ask something else instead - are you able of letting your audience know that time is running out *without* putting on a big scary countdown timer? Then I'd try to use the other way first!
There's no right or wrong here, though. What's fair and right for you might feel different for another business owner.
So what do you think? Are you pro or against countdown timers in your emails?

My relationship with yoga is interwoven into my business story.
I started practicing yoga right around the time that I started my business. And showing up for myself, day in and day out, was so important for both of those journeys.
Yoga taught me that I will wake up every day feeling a little different, and there would be days where my appropriate edge would be unlike the previous day. Learning to accept that and standing tall despite the struggles came in handy when I sat myself down to work.
Business taught me to be gentle with myself. Cause I'm the only one running this show - if I keep criticizing myself or won't take that break, that would have serious consequences on both my wellbeing and my business.
I'm so grateful that yoga became such a powerful force in my life, in my business life. I can't wait to see where it'll lead me next!

You know what's really heartbreaking? 💔
Kicking some serious ass for your client just to get a short and dry testimonial from them.
So how do you get those luscious testimonials that attract other ideal clients to you as if you were a damn magnet?
You guide your clients and ask them specific questions. And when you get their answers, you can go ahead and compile a dream testimonial. 🌟
Here are some of the questions I ask my clients when we're about to wrap up a project together:
▹ What was happening with your copy that led you to work with me?
▹ Before hiring me, what did you try doing to overcome that difficulty?
▹ Was there anything that surprised or delighted you when it came to working with me?
You know that a powerful testimonial can get you your next ideal client - So what are you waiting for?
Get those testimonials! 💪
What's one more question you'd ask your clients to get some more juice? 👇

Don't go chasing waterfalls... 🏃♀️
Great, now that we all got this classic of a song stuck in our heads and I have your undivided attention, hear me out -
The fact that you care about your business so much is great, but you know all too well that being too close to *anything* you care about that much can set you up in the worst possible way. 😣
What do I mean by that?
Let's take your copy as an example.
Have you ever tried writing your own website? How about a 7-parts email sequence? 🤔
I know I have last year, and those were some of the hardest things I'd had to tick off my to-do list in 2021. 🙋
Not only that it took me ages to write those for my own business, but I also gave a couple of my colleagues to have a look at those, to make sure that I'm on the right track.
Yup, being too close to my business and writing my own copy was a pain in the ass! 👀
But when it comes to writing for others, that thing is a breeze. Unfortunately, you don't have the luxury of doing that - you barely have the time and energy to write for yourself!
So do yourself a favor, don't go chasing waterfalls. Let someone else give your business the TLC (Tender Loving Copy, that is!) it really deserves. 💜
