Farmland birds are among the strongest indicators of ecosystem health, yet their populations have been declining due to factors such as intensive land use, reduced crop diversity, and habitat loss.
Supported by EUSPA through Horizon Europe, the BirdWatch - Europe project is helping address this challenge by combining Copernicus Earth Observation data with species and habitat modelling.
The result is a user-friendly platform that enables stakeholders to assess habitat suitability for birds and identify targeted agri-environmental measures to support biodiversity.

World Environment Day: knowledge drives action
On this day, we're highlighting how Copernicus helps users monitor environmental change, assess climate risks, protect ecosystems, and support the transition to a more sustainable future.
By combining satellite data, in situ observations and operational services, Copernicus delivers the insights needed to inform action, from biodiversity protection and air quality monitoring to renewable energy planning and environmental policymaking.
At EUSPA, we help drive the uptake of these services, supporting users in turning Earth observation data into real-world solutions.

The EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (EU SST) system combines a network of ground-based sensors with advanced processing capabilities to survey and track artificial objects orbiting the Earth. Together, these capabilities provide valuable data, information, and services that contribute to the resilience of space assets.
The SST Partnership’s Member States connect and share their assets to deliver SST services through the SST Service Provision Portal operated by EUSPA. These services are provided to EU Member States, EU institutions, spacecraft owners and operators, as well as other public and private entities.
They help assess the risk of in-orbit collisions and uncontrolled re-entry of space objects into Earth’s atmosphere, while also detecting and characterising in-orbit fragmentations.
The SST capability consists of three main functions:
• Sensors that survey and track objects across all orbital regimes
• Processing capabilities to coordinate data sharing through a common database
• Service provision that delivers actionable information to users

Romania is taking another step towards more resilient maritime security in the Black Sea
Following a successful pilot of the Galileo-enabled Asset Tracking Demonstrator aboard Romanian patrol vessels, the country has launched a new procurement procedure for modern coastal patrol vessels equipped with Galileo-enabled navigation systems and OSNMA authentication capabilities.
The pilot, carried out jointly by Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, EUSPA, the Romanian Border Police (Poliţia de Frontieră Română), and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, demonstrated how Galileo services can help strengthen maritime operations by improving trust in positioning data and helping detect GNSS interference such as spoofing and jamming.
At the core of this capability is Galileo’s Open Service Navigation Message Authentication (OSNMA), delivered by EUSPA, which allows users to verify that navigation data has not been manipulated.
Learn more about the pilot, the technology behind it, and why this marks an important step for operational maritime security:
EU patrol vessels adopt Galileo OSNMA for secure positioning Romania has launched a new procurement procedure for the acquisition of modern coastal patrol vessels that will be equipped with navigation systems enabled with Galileo and its navigation message authentication service, the European Union’s global satellite navigation system.
