On the Road Again
"We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us." So how to start and do not sound like every other million and second blog about travelling?
Hardly, right :-)? We would like to write about all our travels, near or far, long or just next door. But, wait a bit, who are we, actually? Let us introduce ourselves – Monika & Michal, two crazy travelling persons, from Prague, Czech Republic, and last but not least, husband and wife by now. Hopefully it will be sometimes funny, sometimes interesting, sometimes annoying, but never ever boring. W

Last Christmas, we decided to fly away and spend it somewhere warm. We chose Gran Canaria for the warmth, flight availability and famous cycling routes (for Michal, obviously 😉)....

We celebrated our 10 years anniversary this year. It was my turn to organise it, so I prepared a surprise trip for Michal. He only knew to take the days off and received packing instructions a few days before. We arrived at the airport and, armed with headphones and magazine, he had no clue where we are off to. Once we boarded the KLM aircraft he was sure he got it....

Taking turns riding our bike and driving, we covered the distance from Toledo through France and Germany back home to Prague in four days. We embraced the last chance of swimming in the sea on this adventure near Capbreton, enjoyed French castle country along the Loire river in Tours and Blois and experienced the echte German countryside beer, schnapps un quest hotel in Kaiserlautern, before pacing through Germany to get home....

After four months touring northern Spain and Portugal, it was finally the time to set sail in the direction of home, with a bit of sadness. We flew back from Azores to Lisbon, collected our car from the valet parking company and got to the storage unit were we left our bikes. It was midnight, nobody around, and our access code didn't work....

Terceira, another Azorian island we have visited, is different from the others again. When approaching by plane, you can see little fields of all shades of green, covering the whole island, even the slopes of little cones of volcanoes. It is very photogenic. Terceira also has its UNESCO listing, but it is, against all expectations, architectural. We only spent two nights here, so we must return and explore more....

Every island of the Azores is different. An interesting fact about Pico is that it is famous for its wine-growing between lava stones—yes, stones, not soil. And, contrary to our expectations, the wine is actually very good. The vineyards are part of the UNESCO world heritage. Pico is also home to the highest mountain of Portugal, called (surprisingly) Pico. If you can focus on its peak, you are lucky because clouds usually cover it....

Faial is the newest island. At least, the westernmost part is. It is so young it was not there when our parents were born. It is the smallest of the four we visited, just for a day trip by ferry from Madalena, but could easily spend a night there....

In the first post about Sao Miguel, I mentioned some of the places we found interesting in the towns and villages of the island. In this post, I want to talk about its natural wonders. Let's dive into hot springs, hike trails to waterfalls and lakes and enjoy the calming effects nature could have on one's soul....

Nine inhabited islands form the Azores archipelago. Sao Miguel is the main one, the entry point for majority of visitors. Ponta Delgada international airport is located here. It would be a shame not to visit some of the other ones. It is true that Sao Miguel is the most turistic of all of the islands, but it does offer some great perks, too....
