« What Lies Beyond »

This question is the keystone of my practice, an urge to discover what else is out there, beyond my horizon. Not a discontent but a fundamental need to know more.

Trying new approach to resolving problematic compositions - thumbnails. It feels as if I’m accessing an unknown part of my brain, it’s fun and addictive.
Am I running away from solving the problems on the current piece?

I usually don’t use color schemes comprising of mostly high-chroma colors, I prefer saturated areas complemented by muted tones. But this palette appeared on my mixing tray by accident and I’m not one to ignore the sign and I accepted the challenge.

“Nearly There”, acrylic on board, 30 x 30 cm…still deciding on the orientation.

Snowflakes flying around horizontally outside my window. Surprisingly, pink, crimson, orange and purple hues dominate my current palette trays and make their way onto various works in progress. Some successfully, others not.

My paint palettes are constantly changing, evolving but at the same time often circling back to previously used color schemes. In such cases, older, unresolved pieces call to me again and sometimes cross the finish line.
This baby started as a study in 2020; it was finished in 2023 only because I turned to Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold after a long time of avoiding it.

Little piece that resisted, rebelled against the reason and was wrecking all kinds of havoc among my other works in progress.

Are you too on a constant quest to try new shapes and brushstrokes?

I am easing my way back into the studio after a long absence. Bit of painting, evaluating some pieces, gessoing paper and redoing my reference cards so the swatches include both tints and shades of the colors. I am doing my best to remember how the particular color swifts (especially when mixed with white) but these definitely save time 😊

One of those situations when you have no idea how did you arrive at a certain point. As I was learning about gouache as a medium and how to apply it to the surface hard edges started to appear. These will remain pinned on my mental pinboard for some time. The slow, thoughtful process was strangely appealing, I’m sure I’ll revisit the idea again.

Exploration in pink and grey. I have a couple of favorite color combos with very and this is one of them.
