Our student Eliška spent a week in Scotland as a part of her internship at the University of Salford, meeting Her Royal Highness Princess Anne! Here are her reflections:
As a part of my internship, I went a field trip to the Isle of Great Cumbrae, to the Field Studies Council in Millport. It was a trip for a Marine Biology course at The University of Salford, designed to introduce undergraduate students to data sampling and identifying species in marine ecosystems. I joined this trip as part of my internship at the Environmental Research & Innovation Centre (ERIC), and got invaluable experience in supervising students, as well as learning about UK's marine life.
I helped Professor Mariana Do Amaral C. Lima in tutoring a small group of undergraduate students over the course of the week in:
1️⃣ Identifying and quantifying species collected through an exploratory trawl with the council's vessel.
2️⃣ Guiding students in data collection at a rocky shore site - using transects and quadrats to assess its biodiversity.
3️⃣ Assisting sampling at a sandy shore - using transects, quadrats, and fishnets to quantify and demonstrate the differences among all the locations.
The entire (sunny!) week was full of learning, observing wildlife, and fun activities. We were also joined by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, who was keen on getting to know more about our work.

💚 A big thank you to everyone who came to our End of Year Party!
We kicked off the afternoon with a short speech by Peter Kumble, followed by Martin Hanel, Vice-Rector for International Relations. We were also pleased to welcome our Dean, Michael Komárek, and introduce our new Vice-Dean for International Relations, Roman Juras.
During the event, we took a moment to thank the Faculty management for supporting student events, as well as our incredible ambassadors and student association members who help make them happen. As a small token of appreciation, they received CZU merchandise, including caps and hoodies. 🧢💚
Good food, good company, and a great atmosphere — the perfect way to wrap up the semester. 🌿✨
Have a wonderful summer, and we look forward to seeing you again next semester! ☀️🎓

The May Erasmus BIP mobility “Embedded Intelligence in Water Quality Measurement Systems” at the University of Craiova was an absolutely great experience, and we brought back many valuable memories from it. It was an excellent opportunity for us to meet new people, experience international teamwork in practice, and establish connections with students from Romania and Greece.
From an academic perspective, we were particularly interested in the integration of modern technologies, sensor applications, and topics related to water quality monitoring. The entire programme was funded through Erasmus+, awarded us 3 ECTS credits, and was not only beneficial for our studies but also highly inspiring and enjoyable.

Exams didn’t go as planned? It happens. Ignoring it? That’s the real problem 🙃
Halfway through — all good, or starting to feel a bit off?
You don’t have to deal with it alone 💪

🎓🌿 Congratulations to our Landscape Architecture Master’s students!
The thesis defenses and state exams have been successfully completed, and we are incredibly proud of all our graduates for their hard work, creativity, and dedication throughout their studies.
We are happy to see another group of talented students begin a new chapter — whether in professional practice, research, or further studies.
Thank you for being part of our faculty, and we wish you all the best in your future journeys 💚

🇬🇧🌍 University of Salford students visited FZP CZU for the third time!
This year, 49 students joined the field trip, making it one of our largest visits yet 👏
Co‑organised by Peter Kumble (Department of Landscape and Urban Planning) and supported by our GSN student ambassadors, the programme combined campus tours, field trips, lectures, urban farming and water research across Prague 🌱💧
A great example of long‑term international cooperation in action.

🌍✨ “GO GREEN OR GO HOME!!”
That was the motto of our student Le Tran Hieu Anh (Environmental Data Science, FŽP CZU) during an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme in Bucharest.
From building a “dirt tiramisu” (microbial fuel cell ⚡) to working on sustainable construction ideas, the programme combined hands-on learning, lab work, and real-world environmental solutions.
One of the highlights? Visiting the ELI-NP research facility, where cutting-edge technology meets scientific passion — a glimpse into the future of research 🔬
But Erasmus is not just about studying. It’s also about people, cultures, and shared moments — turning a short experience into lasting memories and friendships across Europe 💚
“If I had the chance, I would do it all over again.”
👉 Thinking about joining an Erasmus+ programme? This could be your story too.

💧🌿 Field trip to Hostivice — learning how to read a stream like a scientist.
Not far from Prague, we explored water quality in a local stream using basic water quality measurements like pH, dissolved oxygen and conductivity, and also performing kick sampling and catching aquatic organisms as bioindicators of the quality of the environment. Among the finds were EPT species (a good sign of cleaner water, ephemeroptera, plecoptera, trichoptera - mayfly, stonefly and caddiesfly larvaes), but also worms, snails, and leeches — pointing to more oxygen-poor (anoxic) conditions, likely influenced by sediments coming from nearby fish ponds (yes, we spotted carps too 🐟).
Along the stream, we could clearly see the difference between clean and eutrophicated sections, especially near a wastewater treatment plant discharge, where increased nutrients led to visible algal growth.
Students also carried out hydromorphological assessments of different stream sections, looking at how physical structure influences ecological status.
The kick sampling and bioindicator work were part of the Teaching about Water project supported by EU Interreg program, showing how student-led ideas can turn into real field-based learning experiences.
Science, teamwork, and muddy boots — that’s how we do it 💚
