🤍 WHITE ZION 🤍

I thought painting loosely meant painting chaotically, at high speeds, with no thought, just pure, raw feeling. But I’m finding that it actually requires just as much if not more precision than painting in a controlled way. It also requires an enormous amount of intention. To me, the beauty of loose painting is seeing the evidence of the brush on a canvas. Feeling the confidence it takes to put something down and let it sit there, as gloopy or scratchy or wobbly or imperfect as it ends up. Which means I can’t hide behind multiple layers of paint, and I have to approach every shape, every stroke with intention. The looseness only comes in after.

Or is it in between? I don’t know, but I like the feeling.

⚡️🌀 BLUE BARDO 🌀⚡️

I’ve wanted to get looser in my painting for a long time, but I’ve been afraid to take the leap. The few times I’ve experimented with a looser style this year, things have always ended in half-covered canvases and frustration. The problem is I’m too used to the feeling of control I get from painting in a precise, organized way, and I’m scared of straying away from it because I’ll have to feel like I don’t know what I’m doing again. Because my paintings might look messy and unpolished. But I also realize the only way to improve is to experiment and make mistakes. I’m not sure why I chose this moment to start doing that - I’ll probably look back in three years and put those pieces together.

Until then, embracing the mess.
