Her Majesty acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952 on the death of her father King George VI, and this year marks a record-breaking 70 years of service.

But how have Jubilees been celebrated in the past?

👑 Edward III celebrated his Golden Jubilee in 1376 with a weeklong joust at London’s Smithfield. It began with a procession from the Tower of London accompanied by trumpeters 🎺🎺

👑 Elizabeth I marked her accession each year with jousts at the Palace of Whitehall. These occasions were held on the site of modern-day Horse Guards Parade 🐎

👑 George III celebrated his Golden Jubilee in 1809 with church services of thanksgiving, processions, feasting, a firework display and much more. There were gun-salutes all around the city, including at the Tower of London, and celebratory menus often included roast beef and Christmas pudding 🍮

👑 Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in 1897 with a royal procession through London. 17 of the carriages carried the royal family and the leaders of Britain’s dominions and Victoria travelled in an open carriage pulled by 8 cream horses. Beacons were lit across the UK and a state banquet, garden parties, lunches and tea parties were held to celebrate the occasion ☕
