Autumn begins this week, bringing a familiar transformation to leaves above ground. But inside every leaf, there is another world of structures that normally remains completely hidden from view.

This STEM micrograph shows a section through the central vein of a leaf from a herbaceous plant. A clearly visible chloroplast can be observed in detail, including its internal thylakoid membrane system — the structure where the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis take place.

As leaves prepare for autumn, chlorophyll is gradually broken down, allowing other pigments to become more visible and giving foliage its characteristic seasonal colors.

The sample was imaged in STEM mode at 10 kV, demonstrating the strong contrast and fine ultrastructural detail achievable with low-voltage electron microscopy.

This week, we're celebrating International Microorganism Day, a perfect occasion to look more closely at one of the best-known bacteria in science: Escherichia coli.

Although E. coli is often associated with disease, most strains are harmless and are natural inhabitants of the intestinal tract. It is also one of the most widely used model organisms in biology: under optimal laboratory conditions, some strains can divide roughly every 20 minutes, making E. coli exceptionally useful for studying bacterial growth, genetics and cell biology.

This STEM micrograph shows a single E. coli cell imaged with the LVEM 25 at an accelerating voltage of 15 kV. The image reveals the characteristic rod-shaped morphology and fine internal contrast of the bacterial cell, demonstrating how low-voltage electron microscopy can provide valuable structural information at the nanoscale.

Life exists at every scale — from entire ecosystems to the delicate structures inside a single plant cell. This micrograph of an onion section reminds us that even the most familiar plants contain an extraordinary world hidden from the naked eye.
Captured with the LVEM 25E in TEM mode, the image reveals fine cellular organization and internal structures with clear contrast, showing how easily valuable structural detail can be observed at the nanoscale.

Dear students, summer mode is officially over — time to switch your brains back on!
September means new notebooks, new challenges and a return to the classroom. And what better way to welcome the new school year than with a closer look at the organ that will be doing most of the work?
This electron micrograph reveals the intricate structure of brain tissue at a scale far beyond what our eyes can see — a small reminder of just how extraordinary the machinery behind learning, memory and curiosity really is. Close to the cell nucleus, we can also see the delicate membrane network of the endoplasmic reticulum, offering a glimpse into the complex inner organisation of a brain cell.

So, brains on, pencils ready… and back to school!

The reveal is here: DF and HAADF imaging are coming to STEM in the LVEM 25E.

Alongside bright-field imaging, the new modes provide complementary views of the sample:
DF — diffraction contrast
HAADF — Z-number contrast

And switching between these imaging modes is simple: the new modes are fully automated and available at the click of a button.

Discover the new possibilities for materials science at IMC21 in Liverpool, Booth 119, and book a live demonstration during the event.

is just a few days away! 🔬

From 31 August to 4 September, you can find the Delong team at Booth 119 in Liverpool, with both the LVEM 5 and LVEM 25E running live throughout the congress.
Come and see what low-voltage electron microscopy can bring to your research — from high-contrast imaging to flexible multimodal analysis. We'll also present four scientific contributions on dark-field imaging, micro- and nanoplastics, soft matter, and natural graphite.

This week, we are celebrating World Lake Day – a reminder that even the smallest particles can become part of a much bigger environmental story. Let's treat our lakes, waterways, and the life within them with care by reducing plastic waste and acting responsibly towards nature.
This SEM–BSE micrograph, captured with the LVEM 5, shows a diatom in a sample containing nanoplastics. The strong BSE contrast clearly reveals the diatom's finely patterned silica shell against its surroundings, making water-related samples and tiny particles easy to examine with the compact LVEM 5.

And next week at in Liverpool, you can see for yourself what our LVEM systems can do.

The picture is getting clearer.

More contrast can reveal a different side of the same sample — and new imaging capabilities will be introduced soon.
We will present them at in Liverpool, Booth 119. Book a live demonstration and see our low-voltage electron microscopes in action.
