“Shark! Well, that’s the end of me 👋!”

That’s literally the first thing most people imagine when they think about running into a shark. But guess what - we’re really not on the menu! 🦈

Think about it this way: imagine you’re craving a juicy, fragrant steak… but instead you get mostly bones with a tiny bit of lean, smelly meat (because our blood cocktail has all kinds of chemicals in it) wrapped in rubber (wetsuits!). That’s not exactly a 5-star meal for a shark.

Humans have lots of bone and relatively little fat compared to seals or fish - which are real energy goldmines for sharks. So from an energy perspective, we’re just not worth it. And sharks can tell the difference between fish blood and human blood. They’re not confused predators here to eat us.

Sure, sometimes sharks mistake us for something else or get curious. Most shark bites on people aren’t predatory attacks - they’re exploratory “test bites,” kind of like how you might poke something with your finger before deciding what it is. And when sharks realize we’re not tasty, they usually swim off quickly.

☝️ Most mistaken interactions happen because we don’t respect their environment - going into waters at the wrong time, in the wrong conditions, or without understanding their behavior.

📊 What the data really shows:

• On average, there are about 60 - 80 unprovoked shark bites worldwide each year.

• Only around 5 - 10 of these are fatal.

• The vast majority are non-fatal, one-off “test bites”, after which the shark swims away.

• Considering how many people enter the ocean every year, the risk remains extremely low.

• Humans kill hundred million sharks every year, mainly through fishing and bycatch. Sharks, on the other hand, cause only a handful of human deaths.
