Lactation consultations, breastfeeding education and support for families. By Mariana Bigio, IBCLC. That first night at home was unforgettable. "Measures"?
My name is Mariana Bigio, and this is my story...
When my first child was born, I was lucky to have someone at my side that helped me to breastfeed him at the delivery room. The next few feedings seemed to be fine, until we came back home. He simply couldn’t latch on, so we spent the entire night crying and trying to breastfeed him. The next morning Kate, my doula, came by, and she worked the enti

When it comes to breastfeeding, the rule of ‘every 3 hours’ simply doesn’t apply to your baby!
Why? Because a number of reasons:
1️⃣ Your baby is a human being and not a machine, and as no one is preventing you from eating as many times and as much as you want, your baby should not be stopped either.
2️⃣ Newborns have a tiny stomach, which means they eat small amounts at the time, and, as breast milk is rapidly digested, your baby’s stomach needs frequent refills.
3️⃣ Your body builts a good milk supply by frequent stimulation. In other words, the more and frequent suction you get, the more you will produce.
4️⃣ Babies can perfectly tell when they’re hungry or they need a quick sip by doing hunger cues. Putting hands in their mounths, sucking motions, sucking noises, rooting those are pretty good signs that they need to eat. Don’t miss them!
Keep in mind🤓 that you’ll probably get much more information about your baby by simply observing him and learning to read his signs, than staring at the clock 🕰️
And if you’re still doubting if your baby’s getting enough milk, let’s talk📲 and find out.

Meeting with my expectant parents for their prenatal sessions is one of my favorite parts of my job 💜
We talk, we learn, we laugh and make jokes. But at the end, all their questions are answered, and they walk away feeling empowered and ready for the next steps 👶

Soft breasts don’t mean your milk supply is low 🤍
So what does it mean? 🧐
1️⃣ Your milk supply goes through an adjustment period during the first 6–8 weeks postpartum. During this stage, it’s very common to feel overly full, heavy, or leak frequently.
2️⃣ After those first few weeks, if your baby is feeding regularly and gaining weight well, your body simply adjusts to your baby’s needs. Supply becomes more efficient and regulated according to demand.
At this point, your breasts are more used to frequent milk removal, so they often start feeling softer and lighter than they did in the beginning.
You’ve also probably become more accustomed to that early fullness and engorgement feeling. The good news? That uncomfortable stage doesn’t last forever breastfeeding usually starts feeling easier and more manageable with time ✨
⚠️ Remember: a baby who is thriving, content, and gaining weight appropriately is one of the best signs that breastfeeding is going well 💜

Happy Mother’s Day!!! 🥰😘😎
The secret to a great milk supply😌
SPOILER ALERT ⚠️
The secret for a great milk supply is no secret at all.
Yeap! As simple and as complicated as it sounds. You don’t need to take special teas, or eat certain foods, or undergone expensive treatments. This not skincare 😆
This is about to understand how your body works, how the milk cycle works!
We are mammals, and as every mammal in the 🌎, our body is designed to breastfeed our babies when they’re born. And our babies are designed to take the breast after birth. We have all the equipment for that.
Sooo… the main and most important thing you need to produce milk is suction. Suction on your breast! That’s the only way your body have to understand that there’s a baby here and it needs to start working. No pill, tea or food will do that.
This is pure Nature.
I know there can be challenges, but my point is, if something isn’t working the way Nature conceived it, there must be a cause.
⚠️Look for help to find it out.

The ‘perception of low milk supply’ is real, but it doesn’t make it your reality.
Many times it can be misunderstood when we can’t differentiate from what is normal and what’s not.
A healthy good milk producing breast usually feels soft (or not swollen); but so as the low supply breast.
However, there’re slight differences. Small little details, but quite important to know for sure.
Understanding the big picture baby’s weight gain, amounts of feedings per day, etc. Will help you know the difference between a good supply and a low supply…

‘Ni**le Shields’ This small silicone device, often overused, but mainly missused 😳
And how come not? Just the name is confusing, but I must say it out loud!
📣Ni**le shields are NOT meant to protect the ni**le from pain.
Pain is caused by a shallow latch or a disfuctional sucking. That won’t be solved by the shield. Actually, in the case of a shallow latch, it can make it worse. ⬇️
The shield is obviously larger than your ni**le, that means that its tip will be the one that actually make it to the end of the mouth -the confort zone-, leaving your ni**le a bit more superficial in your baby’s mouth. This can lead not only to pain or discomfort, but to an insufficient milk intake.
⚠️The real purpose of the Ni**le Shield is to facilitate the latch, when a baby’s unable to do it on his own. And that could be due to different causes.

Using the right fl**ges size is crucial to have an efficient milk removal ✅
Efficiency = More Milk & Pain Free
📌Measure your ni**les 20-30 min after nursing or pumping to get an accurate size. And yes! Measure both sides, as you may be different sizes on each ni**le.
📏You’ll get three possible sizes. Try the three of them. Your right fl**ge size will be the one that causes you less discomfort or none, and the one you can pump more milk.
⚙️Try this at home. You don’t need a ni**le measuring card like mine. A ruler or a measuring tape is more than enough to measure your ni**le from base to base. It’s easy and pretty effective.

Buying a pump nowadays can be really overwhelming 😳 There’re so MANY brands in the market that is impossible to keep updated. But is important for be familiar with the types of pumps and the advantages of each one of them.
Answering the question, ‘why will you need to pump?’ responds to the frequency you’ll need it. It’s not the same pumping once a day or every other day for occasional bottles, and pumping 6-8 times a day.
In other words, how many bottles do you need per day? Remember for every bottle, one pumping session, so the ratio pumping-bottle is 1:1.
And finally, you must know your correct fl**ge size. This is a game changer when is comes to milk output. The best fl**ge size is the one that is comfortable for you, and at the same time more milk comes out.
If you’re still not sure how to meet these 3 ⬆️

Knowing the purpose of your pumping journey will give you a much clearer idea of when to pump 🤍
Prolactin levels fluctuate throughout the day, which is why you may notice higher milk volumes at certain times.
But the truth is: every journey is unique. Every mom has different needs, goals, and possibilities when it comes to pumping and that matters.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to one simple rule: ✨ supply and demand ✨
Whether it’s your baby or a pump creating the demand, your body responds by doing the rest 🍼
