🚍 Today's 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 is a reminder that mobility is not just about moving people—𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲.

Our evidence from cross the Western Balkans and Moldova shows that transport systems are still designed as if everyone travels the same way. They don’t!

𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸—school drop-offs, healthcare visits, household responsibilities resulting in complex, multi-stop journeys that current transport systems fail to support.

When public transport ignores these realities:
❌ Women face time poverty and limited job opportunities
❌ Rural communities remain isolated
❌ Car dependency increases
❌ Climate goals are undermined

💡 What needs to change?
We need transport systems that reflect real lives:

✔ Align routes and schedules with care responsibilities
✔ Invest in safe, accessible, and reliable public transport
✔ Expand rural mobility solutions (including electric minibuses)
✔ Apply gender-responsive budgeting to transport investments
✔ Integrate gender and time-use data into climate and transport policies

Because 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 “𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝗱-𝗼𝗻”, but rather it is a precondition for effective climate action.

📣 Join our conversation as part of the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development for the UNECE Region, GBWN is hosting a side event: “𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲, 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻”: https://regionalforum.unece.org/events/care-climate-and-mobility-why-gender-responsive-transport-essential-just-climate-action

🌿 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗱𝗲. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄

Every year on International Women’s Day, women are celebrated with flowers and symbolic gestures. While these expressions are meaningful, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 something more lasting: 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. 🌼🏵🌷

Across the Western Balkans and beyond, 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀. At the same time, the green transition is opening new opportunities in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, circular economy, and climate innovation.

But how to close the gap without the data? 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 makes it difficult to understand where the gaps are and how to close them.

Through GBWN’s watchdog initiatives, 𝗰𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 and green investments are spent, ensuring they benefit communities equitably 🍃 From energy to transport and agriculture, gender-responsive climate finance helps build stronger, more resilient societies...

This year's International Women's Day 2026 theme 'Give To Gain' encourages us to come back to 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, where everyone can thrive every day!

Budgets tell the truth... Without clear numbers, “commitments” risk being nothing more than nice speeches. Accountability starts with transparency, and transparency starts with tracking every cent, through gender lens.

PEFA's GRPFM-6 shows whether a government can follow the money for gender equality from planning, through spending, to final reporting.

Do public policies work equally for women and men? Without sex-disaggregated data, we can’t really know. 🤷🏼‍♀️

What gets measured, gets managed, so let’s start measuring what matters.

➡️ PEFA's GRPFM 5 assesses whether governments include sex-disaggregated performance data in budget documents and reports, as it is crucial for tracking if public services deliver equally for women and men.

🫰🏼 "Should I spend more or spend smarter?" is a question we ask ourselves daily... But do we ask our governments the same?

🫰🏼 Budget decisions don’t affect everyone the same way. Gender Impact Analysis doesn’t demand more money, it demands better decisions! It's about understanding who benefits, who doesn’t, and why.

Soon you will learn more about PEFA, a framework for assessing and reporting on the strengths and weaknesses of public financial management - so 👀🔎
