“Like most final year students, I also had to complete an internship as a part of my degree - but I didn’t want to just choose anything and get it over with, I wanted to gain valuable experience, interning at a company whose mission I align with, and most importantly, I wanted to work on an interesting and challenging machine learning project I would be proud to have on my resume.Of course, I didn’t know that SmartCat would tick all of those boxes before I applied, but looking back at my 2 month internship now, I can confirm that it did!

During my internship I worked on researching and fine-tuning Stable Diffusion (a very impressive text to image generation model), and applied the acquired knowledge to build an app around it - I even got to showcase the app at the 2023 Data Science Conference, where hundreds of people tried the software!
And I didn’t do it alone, my mentor Stanko was always there to guide and help me, or crack some puny jokes… and the nourishing and friendly environment that is the SmartCat office made the whole experience that much more enjoyable.

I learned a lot, built some pretty impressive software, and met some very inspiring people - all of which I’m very grateful for.”

Ever wondered how your favorite social media platform magically shows you the perfect content? Our colleague Dušan Milunović, Data Engineer, spoke about the core algorithms steering vector search - HNSW, LSH, and PQ. He broke them down to expose the intricate mechanisms that drive their functionality and showed how these algorithms work their magic and why they're the heartbeat of efficient searches.

Dušan’s lecture was a journey into a world where smart systems learn and adapt to your preferences.

What topics did we discuss at the Data Science Conference? Part II

This is a story about one of many optimists in our team. He always starts by asking what can I do to solve/master/advance/support something. As an engineer, he build things up. As a manager and an entrepreneur, he does the same. He often says: “𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩, 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐧𝐨 𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲.”

At this year’s Data Science Conference, our CEO Nenad Bozic delivered a lecture on How we can use AI to bring new value to business. He talked about the two big things we need to tackle when it comes to AI, both for companies and clients: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐢𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐭?

They gave a presentation on how to improve search on e-commerce websites. Nenad and Nikola talked about Al enhancements for e-commerce platforms, new tools that are emerging and opportunities for semantic search with vector databases.
Nikola is working with the newest Al tools to be more efficient, so he also talked about how to be a smart engineer, instead of prompt engineer, during his breakout session.
