For more than three decades, BORIS have moved through heavy music less like a conventional band than a force of their own: doom, drone, shoegaze, noise rock, punk, psychedelia and avant-metal bending around them as if through a cracked prism. Formed in Tokyo in 1992, they became one of the rare groups able to speak at once to metal lifers, art-rock obsessives, noise heads and indie listeners who understood that heaviness could be beautiful, not only brutal. The evidence is everywhere: collaborations with Merzbow, Sunn O))) and Keiji Haino; releases on Southern Lord, Hydra Head, Sacred Bones and Third Man; music entering the cinematic world of Jim Jarmusch’s The Limits of Control; and PINK itself, the record that pushed Boris far beyond specialist cult status. Released in Japan in 2005 and internationally through Southern Lord in 2006, PINK was the moment all their different bodies briefly shared one nervous system: the amp-worship of doom, the sugar-rush of garage punk, shoegaze glare, psych-rock vertigo, biker-gang momentum, and feedback left hanging in the air like neon smoke after an electrical fire. Live, BORIS are not “loud” in the ordinary sense. They turn volume into a physical space. They make heaviness feel radiant. They sound like beauty pushed to the edge of collapse.
