Ear Reconstruction Team

This 15 year old girl had unsuccesfull ear reconstruction surgeries as a young child. We share the joy with her and her parents that we were able to perform today an ear reconstruction using temporoparietal fascia (TPF) in this very difficult case.

Two weeks post-op (stage 1)! This girl lost her ear in a motorcycle accident. Ear loss due to trauma can be difficult for reconstruction due to scaring and loss of skin and tissue. Wear your helmets and stay safe!

When trauma results in a defect larger than one quarter of the ear, reconstruction has to be done using rib cartilage. Careful planning is needed to ensure the framework fits perfectly.

Patients affected with microtia and their parents encouncter a number of questions and dillemas. One of them is whether to undergo ear reconstruction surgery and which type of surgery to chose. Just completed this new ear for a girl with hemifacial microsomia which is in a majority of cases also associated with microtia. Ear reconstruction in patients with hemifacial microsomia represents a special challenge due to skin volume deficiency.
