Iako naravno nije moguće imenovati ih sve, u Srbiji danas imamo čak 30 gnezdećih parova orlova krstaša, pokazuju novi podaci Društva za zaštitu i proučavanje ptica (DZPPS).

The future of the Balkan lynx depends on what range economies do together, not separately 🐾

That was one of the key messages from a side event held yesterday at convened by the Министерство за животна средина и ПП / Ministria e Mjedisit Jetësor dhe PH, and key international, regional and national partners. Focused on one of Europe’s most Critically Endangered large carnivores, the discussion highlighted the need for a stronger and more coordinated regional response to conserve the Balkan lynx and its habitats. The event also provided an opportunity to present the Regional Strategy for the Conservation of the Balkan Lynx and its Action Plan, proposed for endorsement under the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) COP15.

The message was clear: protecting the Balkan lynx requires stronger policy alignment, more effective institutions and enforcement, better monitoring, sustainable habitat governance, and long-term transboundary cooperation among range economies. The discussion also highlighted ongoing efforts under the Biodiversity Task Force WB.

📣 Call for Proposals – Report on Nature-based Solutions for enhancing biodiversity, climate and societal resilience in the Western Balkans

IUCN is inviting qualified experts and organisations to apply for a consultancy to deliver a comprehensive, policy-oriented report demonstrating how Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can support ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience across the region.

The report will provide evidence, practical examples and recommendations to help governments integrate NbS into biodiversity and restoration planning, while also supporting resource mobilisation and investment in nature-positive solutions.

📌 Expected deliverable is a regional report that:
• Assesses the current state and potential of NbS in the Western Balkans
• Quantifies ecological and socio-economic benefits of NbS
• Presents regional case studies and lessons learned
• Provides policy recommendations to support biodiversity and restoration targets
• Includes summaries tailored for policymakers and donors to facilitate uptake and investment

🌿 Why does nature matter for the future of the Western Balkans?

From forests and rivers to wetlands and seas, nature underpins our water, food, climate resilience and well-being. Protecting it is not separate from development - it is essential to it.

That’s where the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans comes in. Adopted in 2020 and aligned with the EU Green Deal, it sets out a shared regional vision for a more sustainable future. One of its key building blocks is Pillar 5: Protection of Nature and Biodiversity.

Our new infographic tells the story of Pillar 5 — what it is, why it matters, and how it guides action across the region. It shows how nature is being integrated into key sectors such as energy, agriculture, tourism and infrastructure, and how regional cooperation helps turn shared commitments into real impact on the ground.
