French farmers are protesting this weekend over falling incomes, soaring fuel & energy costs, heavy EU regulations, cheap imports undercutting local produce - and anger over mandated cow culling. They’re calling for fair prices, less red tape, and protection for French agriculture.

French farmers are particularly furious about the culling of cows infected (or thought to be at risk) with dermatose nodulaire contagieuse - widely known as lumpy skin disease - a highly contagious cattle virus.

This weekend’s protests were sparked after authorities slaughtered around 207 cows at one farm, part of a broader response that has seen over 3,000 cattle culled under strict disease-control rules, even when only a few cases were confirmed. Farmers say the policy wipes out healthy animals and want more targeted measures instead.
