Am I impulsive or spontaneous?

The more desperately we want something - the more we push it away.
A person. A dream. A feeling of belonging. The harder we reach, the further it pulls back - as if our craving itself is the pushing away force. 🔥
The ancient Greeks told a story about exactly this. Tantalus – condemned to stand forever in water he could never drink, beneath fruit he could never grab. The moment he bent down to drink, the water receded. The moment he reached up for the fruit, the branches pulled away. We still call it tantalising for a reason. 🏛️
But some of us respond differently when something feels out of reach. Instead of reaching harder, we stop reaching altogether – cut off the wanting, go numb, tell ourselves it didn't matter anyway. That doesn't free us either. It just buries the longing until something cracks it open again. ❄️
There is a third way. Not grasping. Not withdrawing. Imagine holding a bird in an open hand. 🕊️ It can stay. It can fly. And that openness is the only thing that ever makes it want to stay.
In the Paradox-x workshop Desperation or Desire, we examine both polarities honestly - the desperate craving that drives away what we want, and the cutting off that leads to disconnection. Through introspection exercises we uncover what is beneath this polarisation. And we find the middle ground: staying in genuine contact with our desire, without letting it become a narrow demand. ✨
