Magic Hospital was born in 2003 one of the largest children hospitals in the world, the Beijing Children Hospital.
We work with sick, hospitalized, handicapped, orphaned, abused and at risk children aged 0-18 who are permanently or temporarily deprived of a carefree and fun childhood. When we saw a lack of support programs for children in hospitals in China, we embraced the opportunity to develop a pioneer program - the clowns, sure there were discussions, questions but in the end the argument "Laughter i
s the best medicine" convineced, and we were given the green light to start to sending in the clowns. We kept the slogan as it seemed to be universal and unifying concept, Laughter is the best medicine. The name Magic Hospital came natural and was chosen not only for our desire to turn a hospital into a more supportive and less frightening place for children, but it stands for our mindset to appear out of the blue to help, to simply brighten a day , just like magic. We have been running our Clown program since 13 years now, currently 2 clowns go every Wednesday to the Beijing Children Hospital, and Mr Liu who has been with us since the beginning also goes to the Beida Hospital every second Friday. It is very popular, both sick children and staff. Over the years we saw more and more need for our activities and now have added other programs:
Playtime : where volunteers go and do activities with sick children, currently every Saturday morning at Huaxin hospital, for children who either have or had heart surgery. Outdoorsy Day : after a one day event with the Sun Villages for children of imprisoned parents at the International school back in 2004 we realized so many children never have the chance to do all those fun things like an going for an excursion, hopping into a swimming pool, awe at the animals in a zoo, visit a cinema or theatre etc, so this was what we want to rectify with the Outdoorsy program, which runs of course outside hospitals. Abracadabra: this is our make a wish program for sick children, pure joy when a wish of a child gets fulfilled, for example the boy who had been hospitalised and desperatly wanted to see his grandmother, we organised her visit. Gift giving program - we organise gift drives and spread them across the orphanages and hospitals. Those are our regular programs, In addition we have projects lasting from 2 weeks. We are fully registered under French law 1901, and have a Governing Board that consists of 4 experienced and seasoned board members.
