There are also situational and personal factors. Being in a new environment, having a lot of opportunity through work or social media, alcohol, unresolved attachment issues, low self-esteem that craves external validation, or a history of trauma can lower the threshold. Some women cheat not because they want to leave, but because they want to stay and do not know how to fix what is broken, the affair becomes an escape valve.

Finally, falling out of love and not leaving. Social pressure, finances, children, religion, and fear of being alone keep many people in relationships long after the commitment has emotionally ended. Instead of ending it cleanly, they start a new connection while still in the old one.
