Selling Your Waste
In the bustling city of Douala, waste from supermarkets had always been a problem. Plastic packaging, bottles, and wrappers piled up behind stores, often burned or dumped in gutters, causing floods and foul smells. Storekeepers and supermarket workers considered it just part of the job — something to throw away at the end of each day.
Everything changed when Afrilex Company introduced a bold idea. They announced that anyone could earn 250 FCFA for every kilogram of plastic waste they brought in. Suddenly, what was once considered garbage turned into cash.
At first, the storekeepers laughed. “Who will waste time collecting trash?” one cashier asked. But when the first payment was made, attitudes shifted. A small supermarket manager in Bonamousadi realized that his shop produced 20 to 30 kilograms of plastic waste every month. That meant an extra 5,000 to 7,500 FCFA just from sorting trash instead of tossing it away.
Soon, every worker joined in. Cashiers carefully separated bottles from paper. Cleaners made sure no plastic was mixed with food waste. Even customers noticed the change, dropping their empty plastic bags into special bins instead of the street.
Within a few months, supermarkets across Yaoundé, Limbe, and Buea were doing the same. What had once been a nuisance became a source of extra income and pride.
For the first time, waste wasn’t just waste. It was a commodity — proof that with the right incentive, even garbage could be sold.
And just like that, Cameroon’s supermarkets began selling their waste.
In the beginning, waste segregation in big towns was a battle of words. Health officers and environmental groups spent countless hours convincing residents to separate their waste. Posters were pasted on walls, town criers made announcements, and QHSE departments in companies pushed the message. Yet, many people still dumped plastics, food scraps, and paper together, claiming they had no time or energy to sort trash.
Afrilex Company decided to try a different approach — turning waste segregation into an opportunity. Instead of preaching, they began paying 350 francs per kilogram of clean, separated plastic waste. Almost overnight, attitudes changed. What was once considered garbage became a source of income. Families, shopkeepers, and even children started gathering plastic bottles and bags, carefully cleaning and sorting them.
The company focused on plastics like PET, used in water and soda bottles, and LDPE, found in packaging bags. Soon, a network of collection points sprang up across the city. Beer parlours, provision stores, and supermarkets became key suppliers, with workers setting aside plastic waste instead of tossing it out.
Progress was remarkable. Within months, over 500 kilograms of plastic were collected directly from these businesses every week. The plastics were then sent to recycling plants where they were processed into PET resins and LDPE materials, ready for new manufacturing.
What began as a costly campaign of persuasion had transformed into a thriving cycle of waste management, income generation, and environmental protection — proving that motivation works better than lectures.

Don’t Build a Good Toilet, If You Don’t Have a Good Trash Can with Garbage Bag
Imagine a beautiful modern home with sparkling tiles, running water, and a clean, well-built toilet. Every detail is perfect, showing that the owner understands the importance of proper waste management when it comes to human excreta. After all, nobody wants to live with the smell, sight, or health hazards of poorly disposed waste.
But there’s another side of waste that many people ignore—garbage.
Every day, we go to the market or grocery store and bring home food items carefully packaged in plastics, cartons, and wraps. Once the food is eaten and the items unwrapped, the packaging becomes waste. These discarded plastics and leftovers, if not properly managed, become just as dangerous as poorly disposed human waste. They attract flies, mosquitoes, rats, and disease, creating the same health risks that a filthy toilet would.
Think of it this way:
The toilet takes care of what comes out of the body – excreta.
The trash can with a garbage bag takes care of what comes into the house – groceries and their packaging.
Just like you wouldn’t use a toilet without tissue paper, you shouldn’t dispose of garbage without a garbage bag. Toilet tissue ensures cleanliness inside the toilet, while a garbage bag ensures cleanliness inside and around your home.
So, if you are committed to keeping your toilet clean and disposing of human waste properly, remember this:
“If excreta must be well disposed of, then garbage must also be properly disposed of. If toilet tissue is a necessity in the toilet, then garbage bags are a necessity for your trash can.”

The difference between Europe and Africa is awareness of environmental safety. Once a house is completely constructed and occupied, environmental issues set in. Cooking, eating, respiration, laundry and excretion generates waste that must either be evacuated immediately or allowed to accumulate in the Septic tank and here The LABSA project comes in.
