The commemoration of World Press Freedom Day 2026 may have passed, but the conversation and the responsibility continues.
Over the weekend, the Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists Camasej BUEA Chapter convened a powerful roundtable discussion under this year’s global theme:
“Shaping a Future at Peace: The Role of Media in Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding.”
In a context like Cameroon’s, where information can either inflame tensions or foster understanding, the role of a free, ethical, and responsible press cannot be overstated.
We were honored to host a distinguished panel of experts who dissected both the theme and the lived realities of journalism in Cameroon:
• Mkong Imma: Peace advocate, researcher, and journalist, who emphasized the urgency of conflict-sensitive reporting and the role of youth-led peace-building initiatives.
• Dr. Henry Mekole: Senior journalist and Editor-in-Chief at CRTV Buea, who explored the intersection of digital media, elections reporting, and peace building.
• Dr. Munjah Vitalis: Scholar and Senior Lecturer at the University of Buea, who provided critical insights into governance, political narratives, and the broader socio-political landscape shaping media practice.
Beyond the panel, the round table brought together journalism students and practicing journalists from various media houses in Buea, creating a vibrant space for mentorship, knowledge exchange, and inter-generational dialogue.
As we reflect, one message stands clear:
A free press is not a privilege; it is a pillar of democracy, accountability, and peace.
CAMASEJ Buea remains committed to defending press freedom, strengthening ethical journalism, and equipping media professionals to report responsibly in complex environments.
More updates, key takeaways, and highlights from the commemoration will be shared in the coming days. Stay connected.

World Press Freedom Day 2026: A Conversation We Cannot Ignore
In recent months, Cameroon’s media landscape has once again reminded us why press freedom is not just a principle, but a necessity. From the detention and harassment of journalists covering sensitive issues to a persistent climate of fear, censorship, and intimidation, the space for free, independent journalism remains under pressure.
In a country with a vibrant media scene, journalists continue to face arbitrary arrests, surveillance, and restricted access to information, making the pursuit of truth both courageous and risky.
This is why this year’s theme:
“Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,”
is not just timely, it is urgent.
Because without press freedom:
- Human rights violations go unreported
- Development suffers from lack of accountability
- Peace is threatened by misinformation and silence
Yet when journalists are empowered and protected, they become powerful agents of change; driving transparency, amplifying voices, and strengthening democracy.
Join CAMASEJ Buea Chapter as we commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2026 with a high-level panel discussion bringing together journalists, human rights advocates, and development experts.
Date: May 2, 2026
Time: 2:00 PM
Location: Harvard Lux, Buea
This is more than an event; it is a call to reflect, engage, and act.
Be part of the conversation as we dissect the realities, challenges, and opportunities for press freedom in shaping a peaceful and just society.
Together, let’s defend truth. Promote peace. Drive development.

Freedom of the press is not optional, it is fundamental.
As highlighted by the United Nations (https://www.linkedin.com/posts/restricting-journalists-is-an-attack-on-freedom-share-7449549085595996160-Lawb?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios&rcm=ACoAAEOyOgoBBfpsq6zMTETw9GMKAdhsbJAl1Ks), restricting journalists is an attack on freedom of expression.
At a time when access to accurate information is more critical than ever, silencing the press undermines our ability to make informed decisions about our future.
As we look ahead to World Press Freedom Day on May 3, CAMASEJ Buea Chapter reaffirms that an attack on press freedom is an attack on democracy.
We remain committed to promoting ethical journalism, defending the rights of journalists, and ensuring that truth and accountability continue to thrive in our communities.
We stand in solidarity with journalists everywhere who continue to serve the public interest despite challenges.

Our President Nsoseka Andrew-Acramu and Secretary, Shing Timothy Chia of CAMASEJ-Buea took to DRMTV to shed light on the challenges journalists face in the digital age. They discussed the need for journalists to adapt to the changing media landscape, highlighting both the advantages and disadvantages of new media.
Key issues addressed included injustice, maltreatment of journalists, and information hoarding in Cameroon. Let's continue to advocate for press freedom and push for a better environment for journalism in Cameroon!

Today, we proudly join the global community in commemorating under the timely theme:
“Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”
As English-speaking journalists in Cameroon, we stand at the intersection of tradition and innovation; where the truth must remain our compass, even as AI transforms the way we work.
At CAMASEJ-Buea, we honor the resilience, courage, and integrity of every journalist who continues to inform, investigate, and inspire, often in the face of increasing threats to press freedom.
May this day serve as a call to action to defend the truth, uphold ethical journalism, and use artificial intelligence as a tool, not a threat, in our shared mission to protect free and responsible media.
To every journalist in our chapter and across the nation: your work matters. Your voice matters. The world is listening.

On this International Day Against Breast Cancer, we affirm that “No one should face breast cancer alone.”
As a community of journalists, we have the power to amplify the voices of girls and young women. It’s essential to provide them with the information and support they need regarding their health. Let’s work together to foster an environment where everyone feels empowered to speak up about their experiences and seek help.
Join us in raising awareness and promoting solidarity in the fight against breast cancer. Together, we can make a difference.
