The geographic scope of host use by the ladybeetle parasitoid Dinocampus coccinellae - Biological Invasions 09/06/2023

The geographic scope of host use by the ladybeetle parasitoid Dinocampus coccinellae - Biological Invasions Dinocampus coccinellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) can parasitize over 50 species of ladybeetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), including the invasive Harmonia axyridis. The biological invasion success of H. axyridis has been in part attributed to weak control by natural enemies (Enemy Release Hypothesi...

My research interest relate to Agroecology. I have focuses on natural enemy movement, between crops, between crop-associated habitats and natural environments, at the population and the landscape scale. My main focus had to do with the use of these habitats in relation to biological control. Understanding the seasonal movement of natural enemies and the quantification of the role of ‘sinks’ or ‘sources’ of predators and parasitoids in agroecosystems has been carried out in my lab, using a combination of molecular (diet analyses), population genetics (microsatellite markers) and behavioural approaches. More recently we have also included the role of spiders under different management conditions in apple orchards.

We are now committed as well to a new transdisciplinary approach to increase the adoption of agroecological practices among farmers in central Chile. We seek to identify barriers to gran-scale adoption, and with this information will develop methods together with the communities to increase natural pest control, as well other relevant ecosystem services, such as pollination, all coupled to human well being

Interspecific competition among aphid parasitoids: molecular approaches reveal preferential exploitation of parasitized hosts 23/12/2019

Interspecific competition among aphid parasitoids: molecular approaches reveal preferential exploitation of parasitized hosts When a guild of species exploit the same limited resources, interspecific competition induces the exclusion of inferior competitors, in which case, interspecific recognition mechanisms are needed. Here, we address resource partitioning and interspecific competition among three main solitary parasito...

Manipulation of Agricultural Habitats to Improve Conservation Biological Control in South America Stable and diversified agroecosystems provide farmers with important ecosystem services, which are unfortunately being lost at an alarming rate under the current conventional agriculture framework....

Do hedgerows influence the natural biological control of woolly apple aphids in orchards? 10/12/2019

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10340-019-01153-1

Do hedgerows influence the natural biological control of woolly apple aphids in orchards? The provision of refuges for natural enemies could be a key aspect for the management of the woolly apple aphid [ Eriosoma lanigerum(Hausmann, 1802)] (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in apple orchards. The...

Intraguild predation is independent of landscape context and does not affect the temporal dynamics of aphids in cereal fields 10/12/2019

Intraguild predation is independent of landscape context and does not affect the temporal dynamics of aphids in cereal fields Abundance and diversity of natural enemies increases with higher landscape complexity. However, more species can also increase negative interactions such as intraguild predation (IGP), which could be...
