As Malaysia’s plantation and Indian sectors began facing serious labour shortages, the issue of workforce sustainability became a growing national concern.
In Day 18 of the MIC80 Years Journey series, Datuk T. Mohan recalls how, in 1996, then MIC President Tun S. Samy Vellu brought the issue to the Cabinet level, contributing towards efforts to find solutions for labour shortages affecting Indian-linked sectors and industries.
He also reflects on how subsequent MIC leaders and ministers continued raising and addressing workforce-related concerns whenever MIC was part of the Government and Cabinet.
This episode highlights an important chapter on how policy discussions, representation, and leadership played a role in addressing challenges faced by sectors closely connected to the Malaysian Indian community.

A former football player and dedicated coach, he devoted his life to nurturing young talents, especially at SJKT Puchong Batu 14 and several other schools and clubs. As a proud player of Puchong Hunters Club, he made significant contributions to the development of football in our community.
We have lost a kind-hearted mentor, passionate sportsman, and true friend. His dedication, humility, and service to the younger generation will always be remembered.
I have attached below the details of the final rites of the late Mr. Illangovan Karuppan for the information of relatives, friends, and well-wishers.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

Founded in 1979 under the leadership of Tun S. Samy Vellu, Koperasi Pekerja Jaya (KPJ) was established with a vision to improve the quality of life of the Malaysian Indian community through home ownership and socio-economic empowerment.
At a time when many Indian families were living in estates, KPJ played an important role in creating opportunities for affordable housing and a more secure future. Over the years, more than 1,300 homes were developed and sold, helping many families take their first step towards property ownership.
In Day 17 of the MIC80 Years Journey series, Datuk T. Mohan shares the story behind KPJ, its objectives, and its continuing role in providing access to affordable homes, especially for the B40 Indian community.
Understanding these initiatives helps us appreciate the long-term efforts made towards community development and empowerment.
