The WMO Executive Council’s annual session is underway. Members are exploring ways to meet the growing demand for science and weather, climate and water services amidst resource constraints.

“The demand for what WMO delivers and what National Meteorological and Hydrological Services produce — weather forecasts and warnings, climate data and standards and for scientific cooperation — is growing. Every extreme event makes that clearer,” WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo told the opening session.

As weather, climate and water-related challenges increase, so are advances in forecasting and prediction, satellite technology, supercomputing and AI.

WMO President Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous highlighted the importance of investing in the WMO Commons global financing mechanism and promoting an ecosystem that unites public, private, academic and philanthropic partners to strengthen Earth science observations.

A new season begins 🌞🌍

At 08:24 UTC (10:24 CEST) yesterday, the Sun reached its most northerly point in the sky, marking the June solstice.

Captured here by the MTG-I1 satellite from 36,000 km above Earth, this moment marks the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere. It also means the year's longest day has passed in the north, and daylight hours will now slowly begin to decrease.

Africa's glaciers - found only on Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya in East Africa, and the Ruwenzori Mountains on the Uganda-DRC border - have lost more than 90% of their area since the late nineteenth century.

Mt. Kilimanjaro's ice cover has shrunk from 11.4 km² in 1900 to just 0.98 km² today. Between June 1984 and July 2011, its snow-cover areas were reduced by 77.2%, as seen in this photo by NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth, taken on 4 March 2025.
The continued loss of these glaciers threatens regional water cycles and increases the risk of glacial lake outburst floods.

Only 40% of countries in Africa have multi-hazard early warning systems needed to save lives and livelihoods from extreme climate and weather. However, there are encouraging signs of strengthening preparedness and response capabilities across the region.

Watch as a dust storm blanketed North India in this video shared by India Meteorological Department.

Desertification can increase the conditions that allow dust storms to form and intensify.

WMO and its partners provide the science, monitoring, forecasting, and international coordination needed to reduce the impacts of these storms on people, ecosystems, economies, and public health.

Ahead of the meeting that begins today, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo spoke to Global Governance Media about the critical role of the G7 in building resilience to climate and weather events.

All the data shared from satellite and ground observation systems goes through the World Meteorological Organization, but the G7 provides, for example, the global models that are the initial point for regional and national forecasts.

The Secretary-General says that the G7 can be the influential voice to highlight the importance of observation and forecasting systems as a global public good – that we need to maintain collectively for the benefit of all.
