The warming stripes make it clear: the world is heating up. And a hotter planet means more extreme weather and greater disaster risks.

Today, 20 June, is day, spreading awareness about climate change through the iconic visualisation of temperature trends across more than a century of records.

The decisions made now will shape the planet that future generations will inherit. Reducing emissions and building resilience are needed like never before.

More than 1.2 million Syrians have returned home since December 2024.

Housing, schools, hospitals, and basic services – rebuilt in areas exposed to floods, earthquakes, and extreme heat – need to withstand future shocks, not just present needs.

Syria had no system to track disaster impacts after 13 years of conflict. With UNDRR support, that is changing: a national disaster loss accounting system is now operational; and a multi-hazard early warning system is on the horizon.

"The needs are great, but so is the potential to create a generational transformation by embedding resilience in all aspects of development moving forward," says Sandra Amlang, Chief of UNDRR's Regional Office for Arab States.

Is our legacy for future generations a lifetime of more intense, more frequent heatwaves?

🚨Currently, 95% of losses from recorded economic disasters are due to one of the “big five” hazards: earthquakes, floods, storms, droughts... and extreme heat.

And the frequency and intensity of climate-hazard events are growing: What qualifies as a 1-in-100-year heatwave in 2050 will be more intense than a similar return period event today.

What can be done?
✅Scale up investment in resilience and adaptation
✅Engage the private sector in co-investing
✅Support context-specific adaptive strategies
✅Prioritize high-benefit, low-cost interventions
✅Increase the share of ODA dedicated to disaster risk reduction

Extreme weather and climate-related events affected at least 13 million people and caused over 3,000 fatalities across Africa in 2025, with impacts rippling across economies and communities.

The World Meteorological Organization State of the Climate in Africa 2025 reports:
🌡️ Africa is warming faster than the global average
🌊 Floods accounted for more than half of extreme events
🏔️ Glaciers – including Mt Kilimanjaro – have lost over 90% of their area since the late 19th century
📈 Ocean warming, acidification and sea level rise are continuing across the region

Early warning systems have been proven to reduce disaster impacts and save lives – yet only 40% of African countries have multi-hazard systems in place.

"This report shows not only the scale of the risks, but also the growing importance of early warnings, climate services and coordinated action to protect lives and livelihoods,” said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.

🌡️ Extreme temperatures are reaching unbearable new highs.

This map paints a stark picture: parts of our planet are now experiencing temperatures exceeding 50 °C. Extreme heat is becoming more widespread, more intense, and more deadly. 🔥

In the face of soaring temperatures, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an urgent and concerted effort to enhance international cooperation to address extreme heat in 4️⃣ critical areas:

🤝 Caring for the vulnerable
👷 Protecting workers
🔬 Boosting resilience through data and science
📈 Limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C

Almost every child on Earth is now exposed to at least one climate hazard.

⚠️1.1 billion of our children face three or more hazards converging at once – compound shocks with droughts triggering wildfires, floods destroying schools, heat overwhelming health systems already under strain.

Children are disproportionately affected. Their developing bodies cope less well with physical and psychological stress. And when social services fail under compounding shocks, the consequences follow children for life. 🚸

The UNICEF Children's Climate Risk Report 2026 presents exposure data, vulnerability data, and geographic detail. We owe it to our children to make sure that today's leaders act on this information – reducing disaster risk to secure a resilient future for the next generation.

Disaster risk reduction works best when everyone's efforts connect. 🤝

The Sendai Stakeholder Engagement Mechanism (SEM) brings together people, communities and organisations to coordinate action, share knowledge and shape DRR policy – from global frameworks to local interventions.

It amplifies voices that matter: women, persons with disabilities, and those most exposed to risk.

The SEM is designed to make stakeholder engagement more inclusive, better coordinated, and accountable to those most at risk.🎯

Asia's climate is shifting faster than most regions can track.

The World Meteorological Organization State of the Climate in Asia 2025 documents record ocean heat, accelerating glacier loss, and a warming trend running twice as fast as the previous generation – with extreme heat, flooding, and drought exacting a heavy toll on lives and economies.

The evidence also shows what works:
🌡️ Impact-based forecasting takes warnings beyond weather prediction to what the hazard will actually do
🔔 Timely alerts and coordinated evacuation saved lives during heavy rainfall events in China
🌊 Early warning and early action remain the most cost-effective defence as multi-hazard risks compound

Early warning systems work best when alerts are trusted, messages are clear, and delivery reaches the most exposed communities.
