Last session was a recapitulation of what we have done so far in the season 23/24. Starting scenes as a character with emotions, observe, make statements, use all body parts, use names, use as much detail as possible, letting go of your ideas and of course the good old “accept”: Yes!

When two people are on stage, when do you enter as the third player and why? Do you take the limelight or are you a supportive extra? What happens with two small groups on stage? Who is the hero or protagonist in a larger group on stage? How does the story move forward?

At Jet d’Oh, we are doing improvisation theatre by telling a story, played out in a few consecutive scenes. One of the most challenging parts in doing this, is moving the story forward. A way to deal with this is expressing the need for a change (in the relationship between players). “I want to become a….”, “I can’t continue this way anymore..”

Our last session was about observing your fellow players and saying what you see. “I see you fidgeting with your hands”, “ I notice you are clenching your teeth”. Making factual statements about the here and now based on observations is a very powerful tool.

Last session was all about statements of action. Once the player has chosen their character’s goal (give/take, want/reject, stand ground/yield), we try to physicalise this state by accompanying gestures. Starting to make these gestures brings forth a character conceived in the body, not in the mind.
