Safeguarding the Absolute Prohibition of Torture ❌
Yesterday, the Consortium joined the EEAS and the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) for a critical discussion on the current global context of the fight against torture. 🟠
Survivors shared powerful testimonies that highlighted the devastating long-term impact of torture, not only on individuals but on families, communities, and society as a whole, as highlighted in our most recent report in partnership with FIDH.
The event underscored the increasingly difficult environment in which human rights defenders operate and the growing threats to the absolute prohibition of torture.
Strong calls were made to the EU to uphold its unwavering commitment against torture and to continue providing funding for human rights organisations. ⚠️

❌ Censorship by detention is becoming one of the biggest threats against human rights. Worldwide.
When human rights defenders are detained, fear spreads beyond the prison walls. It affects their families, organisations, and even entire communities.
Together, we can challenge arbitrary detention. ✊🏾

🌎 As we approach the Int. Day in Support of Victims of Torture, we remember what Olof Skoog, former 🇪🇺 EU Special Representative for human rights, shared with us regarding the global fight against torture for the 🇺🇳 40th anniversary of the Convention Against Torture.
This interview was part of the Consortium’s Voices for Human Dignity multimedia initiative. This initiative celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Convention against Torture (1984-2024) by giving a voice to torture victims, experts, and activists.
