The Pimiy Ôcenas Indigenous Relations Advisory Committee has put together some great take home kits in honour of National Indigenous People's Day.

Each kit contains various activities and resources that are fun and educational for families and individuals.

Medicine Teachings with Chantelle Gray of Muskwa Medicine

Sweetgrass is a sacred plant known as the hair of Mother Earth. It is an important part of Indigenous cultural identity and embodies traditional values and beliefs. In a welcoming, safe space we will learn how to build a relationship with the land through hands-on experiences. We will learn traditional ways to care for the lands around us as well as the significance of the medicines gifted to us. These teachings will happen over three sessions that will be open to all, and at no cost. 

Past: Join us as we learn about the purpose of the Pimiy Ôcenas Nâtawîhowin Askiya and why it and its plants matter. 

Present: We will answer the question of how we take care of and contribute to our community garden. 

Future: Together, we will pick medicines, prepare them for storage and use over the winter, and how to ensure the cycle will continue for the next year. 

Together, we will create an opportunity for the community to gather with an Indigenous knowledge keeper. At the final session there will be a community feast and a giveaway for participants to take part in. To register, please contact:

About the Facilitator:

Chantelle is Métis/Cree from Treaty 8 territory in Northern Alberta. While working as a counsellor and life coach, they addressed issues such as substance use, trauma, gender-based violence, food insecurity, houselessness and other systemic barriers that many people face. As they reclaimed their traditional indigenous ways of being and knowing, the gaps in support through a western lens became obvious. In an effort to address these gaps, Chantelle has embraced the role of community aunty and now focuses on grassroots community building opportunities centered around relationships between not only people, but all beings. This takes place through offerings such as storytelling, safe and inclusive talking circles, and land-based teachings for all ages.

Honouring Our Relatives: MMIWG2S+ Information Session with Aboriginal Alert

The Town of Devon, in partnership with Aboriginal Alert, invites all community members to a drop-in information session on Monday, May 5, in observance of Red Dress Day.

This session is dedicated to raising awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR). It provides a safe space for residents to learn about the Aboriginal Alert website - a tool designed to bridge the gap in communication and public notification when Indigenous people go missing.

Why Attend?

Education: Learn about the systemic issues surrounding the MMIWG2S+ crisis.

Empowerment: Understand how the Aboriginal Alert system works and how you can support it.

Community: Stand in solidarity with families and survivors.
