Soapstone Savvy

I've been lacking lately. Time to get busy! Bear in the first picture and the second picture is pipes almost ready to be drilled for the openings. The red one is a finished one I did a while back. Made with Red American Alabaster. The results of the carvings are made with Brazilian Soapstone.

Start em while their young. I started carving around age 6 and I still have my first sculpture I made with George Arlook. It's dated 1998. That's over 20 years old! My boy is only 2 and a half years old. He loves to help me carve. He remembers every piece he has helped me work on and I always show him the finished pieces and he ALWAYS points out the ones he helped me work on. He will say something like "Junior help on this one Daddy!" (Proud dad moment)

He will sit and watch me carve. Most of the time I forget that he is learning so much. When he grabs a file he already knows where and how to hold it. He chooses the exact places that I am working on as if he already knows what to do. What a natural he is going to be. I already call him "my little artist". This kid isn't even 3. And when it comes to sanding the carving he is the same. Very gentle and already memorizes the motions and curves to sand the carvings. The only process he hasn't done yet it polishing. Mainly because the carving is well over 100°c and I do not want him to get injured. I use an oven to warm the carvings before polish. In an ideal situation I would be using a kiln. But you use what you got.
