A great landscape transformation doesn’t start with picking stone, choosing plants, or deciding where the pool should go. It starts with understanding the property and the people who are going to use it.

The OGS design process begins with a preliminary budget discussion before moving into an on-site consultation and property survey. From there, the team considers existing conditions, grading, drainage, architecture, planting, layout, and how you actually want the property to function.

Those conversations become a detailed 2D concept, followed by realistic 3D renderings that let you see how the pool, patio, gardens, outdoor kitchen, lighting, walkways, and other features will work together before construction begins. Once the design is finalized, OGS develops the detailed construction package that helps take the project from concept to build.

Because the real makeover happens long before the first shovel hits the ground.

Sometimes a landscape project doesn’t need to completely reinvent a property to make a noticeable difference.

At our Ross project in Whitby, a new fence and walkway helped redefine how the property looks, feels, and functions.

The fence creates a clean boundary and greater separation around the property, while the new walkway establishes a more intentional route through the space. Together, they bring structure to an area that could easily be treated as purely functional.

And that’s something we talk about often at OGS: the connecting spaces matter too. The path you take around your home, the transition from front yard to backyard, and the boundaries surrounding the property all contribute to the overall landscape.

Not every transformation needs a pool, cabana, or complete backyard redesign. Sometimes getting the fundamentals right is what makes the whole property feel finished.

Before hot tub season really ramps up, this is a smart time to give your spa a little attention. Check your water balance, inspect filters, make sure the cover is in good condition, and take stock of the chemicals and care products you’ll need as usage increases.

It’s also a good time to establish a routine before cold weather arrives. Regular testing is much easier than trying to correct neglected water when it’s -10°C and you’d rather be soaking in it.

Fall yard prep isn’t about making your property look perfectly tidy before winter. It’s about setting your landscape up to come back strong next spring.

September is a good time to start paying attention to what your property needs while everything is still visible. Garden beds can be assessed before plants go dormant, struggling areas of lawn are easier to identify, and trees and shrubs can be checked for damage or overcrowding before the leaves disappear.

It’s also worth resisting the urge to cut everything back. Some perennials and ornamental grasses provide winter interest and valuable habitat, while others benefit from fall cleanup. Knowing the difference can mean healthier growth next season.

This is also the time to think ahead to irrigation shut-downs, final lawn care, leaf management, garden cleanup, and preparing outdoor features for colder weather. Tackling fall maintenance gradually makes a lot more sense than trying to do everything on the last warm Saturday of the year. We’ve all been there.

A little planning now can make that first spring walk around the property a whole lot nicer.
