Ignite Durham Learning Foundation

This summer, when school ends, many Durham Region students will also lose access to the food programs they depend on.
For families already stretched by rising grocery costs, that’s a heartbreaking reality.
Through Ignite Summer, Ignite Durham Learning Foundation is raising $50,000 to provide 200 local families with grocery gift cards for nutritious, culturally relevant food during July and August.
Every gift helps make sure children have the nourishment they need not just to get through the summer, but to return to school healthy, confident, and ready to thrive.
Because hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation.

🌱 Here We Grow Again! 🌱
Exciting things are growing at Village Union Public School!
Thanks to our donors and the team , students recently rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty installing two new garden beds that will soon be bursting with fresh vegetables. Through this hands-on experience, students learned about wicking systems, planting techniques, garden cultivation, environmental stewardship, and the journey from seed to harvest.

These garden beds are much more than a place to grow food, they’re outdoor classrooms where students develop valuable life skills, learn about sustainability, explore healthy food choices, and discover the rewards of patience, teamwork, and caring for the environment.

In the months ahead, the entire school community will benefit from the fresh produce grown right on school grounds. And the learning doesn’t stop when summer begins! The team will help care for and maintain the gardens throughout the summer months, ensuring that every vegetable harvested finds its way into the homes of students and families who can benefit from fresh, nutritious food.
