Always online? Beware of these cyber security risks! 😱

Many companies have transitioned employees into working remotely and although ideal in the time of COVID-19, it makes employees' devices vulnerable without the usual security protocols that the company's office had in place. Below are 3 common cyber security risks and solutions to counter them.

1. Unsecure Networks
Invest in a reliable Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPNs work by encrypting all online activity and hides your IP address. For added precaution, avoid free VPNs as they could do more harm than good.

2. Phishing Attacks
These are usually emails that seem legitimate but are actually scams. They can disguise as many things from banks to actual contacts. The rule of thumb is to avoid clicking links as clicking them may lead to installing malware in your device. If you could, confirm with the recipient if he or she did send that email.

3. Password & Security Management
It's tempting to have one convenient password for many of your accounts but this is what hackers are counting on. Either take the time to make unique individual passwords or use a reliable password manager service.

💳 Personal Data
Cyber criminals know the value of small business' data, these can range from credit card information and patient records, etc. They either hold these for ransom or sell it for profit.

🖥️ For DDoS Attacks
DDoS attacks are performed by recruiting your business' devices to create massive web traffic to disrupt a targeted company's services. Consequences range from a totally unreachable online platform, slow response times, and disruption to business operations.

🔗 Link to Bigger Companies
Hackers can infiltrate smaller companies in order to gain access to bigger ones because usually, they are digitally connected to complete transactions and manage supply chains. (e.g., Target via a 3rd party breach, resulting in 40 million stolen credit card information)

💰 Cash
Many small businesses don't prioritize cybersecurity. Most of the time, data is taken for ransom and when these are ignored, some end up closing completely because they have no means of getting their important files back which are vital for their operations.
