When a child has a a biomedical condition in which a language disorder can occur as part of a complex pattern of impairments, speech-language pathologists should use label: language disorder associated with _______. This includes: autism, brain injuries, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, and Down Syndrome.

If a child is given a DLD label and then diagnosed with one of these biomedical conditions, a speech-language pathologist will update their label accordingly.

DLD is very common, but so unknown.

It affects 1 in 14 people globally, yet many families, educators, and even professionals are still learning what DLD is.

That is why awareness matters.

When more people understand DLD, children are more likely to be recognized, supported, and understood. Adults with DLD are more likely to feel seen. Families are less likely to feel alone.

Over the next month, we are sharing daily posts leading up to Developmental Language Disorder Awareness Day 2026.
