We Communicate grew by another baby (did you know 3 of our team members have had babies in the past year?!) ✨
Becky is soaking in all of the newborn snuggles and appreciates your understanding with slower than usual correspondence in this baby bubble 💙

Starting something new can be scary.
Our team supports so many kids become stronger, more confident readers and writers, yet so many parents we chat with are still surprised that speech-language pathologists support these areas.
To help you get started, we share a ton of information on our website about our rates, team members, and services so that we don't feel like strangers to you.
What questions do you have about reading and writing support for your child? Seriously ask us in the comments! Literacy is one of our favourite things to talk about!

Out with the old, in with the new.
Developmental Language Disorder (also referred to as "DLD") is the recommended term that speech-language pathologists use to identify people who show the following:
- Persistent challenges with language
- Their language challenges cannot be attributed to a lack of adequate language-learning opportunities (for example, severe childhood neglect) or other biomedical condition (for example, autism, cerebral palsy or Down Syndrome)
- Their language challenges impact their social interaction or academics
What can we get rid of? Using terms like SLI, language impairment, receptive and/or expressive language disorder or difficulty, and developmental aphasia.
Identifying and sharing about DLD helps families get connected to incredible resources including: RADLD - Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder, DLD and Me, DLD Diagnostics (out of Western University) and Empowered DLD Parenting.

In November, our team ran our first-ever food drive in collaboration with The Food Bank of Waterloo Region. We initially set out to collect 200 items which we very quickly surpassed.
We received notice today that our food drive brought in:
🥫638 pounds of food
💵 $40 in cash
Together, this provides 612 meals to support the 1 in 9 households in Waterloo region that struggle to afford to put food on the table.
Thank you so much to every person who contributed! What are your thoughts: should we run this again next year?!

Don't drive to another appointment each week. Let us do it for you!
For most children 1-3 years we often like:
🌟 some floor space
🌟 relatively void of too many distractions (although we love to use a child’s activities/toys in session, it can be distracting to have too many toys within the child’s reach)
🌟 a parent/caregiver involved
For most children 4+ years we like:
🌟 a table-top space if possible (this could be a dining room table, kitchen table, or island)
🌟 space relatively void of distractions (no TV/music on)
🌟 a parent/caregiver who can observe the session, be involved in session or within earshot (we totally get it - a perk of at-home services is that you can toss a load of laundry in or prep dinner while your kid gets individualized intervention!)
🌟 use washroom beforehand
🌟 no food or snacks available (water is fine!)
Important: these are not hard and fast rules but general guidelines. You and your SLP are the best team, and we can chat about what works best for your family and child.
Our in-home services are currently available in:
📍Brantford
📍Kitchener
📍Waterloo
Is your child struggling to learn to read?
Not all ways of teaching kids to read & write are supported by research. PLUS, not all ways of helping struggling readers and writers is truly “intervention”. In this video I explain why that is.
If your child has had extra reading help (through school, tutoring, or otherwise) but you’re wondering whether it’s truly intervention, comment or connect with us!

COMMENT an EMOJI that reminds you of Becky.
Becky is a speech-language pathologist who started We Communicate in the spring of 2019. She wanted to create a workspace that felt sustainable as a speech-language pathologist while also forming meaningful connections with families. Over 6.5 years later, the team has grown to span 3 counties, include virtual service across Ontario, and support over 100 families every week.

COMMENT an EMOJI that reminds you of Katie (we'll go first)!
Katie is a speech-language pathologist who joined our team over 4 years ago! Her calm and caring demeanour paired with her drive to learn and grow as a speech-language pathologist makes her clients absolutely love her (although they are probably missing her right now as she is on leave caring for her baby boy).

396 items & counting 🍽️
With 4 more days left in our inaugural food drive with the Food Bank of Waterloo Region, is hitting 400 items too lofty of a goal?
