Math Anxiety 12/21/2024

Great Scott! The latest blog post has descended! After a long hiatus due to many reasons, we are happy to mention that 2024 is now going to be rounded up with the fifth post on Math Anxiety.

This one addresses a current event ongoing in Manitoba, Canada and relates to a few academic papers on the issue. However, the discussion can certainly be applied to learning math in any country or culture.

Check it out!

Math Anxiety

Calling all math professionals in my network!

Have you been exposed to math anxiety?

If you are a math specialist - mathematician, scientist, engineer, teacher or someone who uses more than just elementary math in day-to-day life - who is currently, or in the past, been directly or indirectly affected by math-anxiety, I would like to speak to you.

What made you feel anxious? Was it general anxiety towards math, or anxiety towards a specific topic/domain of math?

How did the anxiety hinder your day-to-day work, specially if your work involves significant amount of math?

How were you able to overcome math-anxiety, or is it still something in progress?

Let me know if you want to talk. Add a comment below or drop me a message. This is not a podcast or anything, it's just a talk amongst friends. I may use what I learn from these talks in writing up a blog post, but no names or direct quotes would be mentioned without explicit permission!

I am not well. Physically and mentally.

I am not going to discuss physical health here, but I do want to talk about my mental health.

It started with news and pictures of Palestinian children being ruthlessly murdered by the occupiers, and things have only gotten worse.

More recently, the news out of Bangladesh has been really heart-breaking. There is a student movement going on, and whether you support the cause of the protest or not, the way the government is handling it with a heavy hand is atrocious. Many hundreds of unarmed civilians have been killed, which includes many children (some as young as 4 years old).

As a father of a 4-year and a 9-year old, it is gut wrenching to see photos of those martyred, and see videos of the parents "speaking" to their dead children (https://www.prothomalo.com/video/bangladesh/jwy5a6dfxz).

All of this has affected me severely. Everything that I was doing outside of work has slowed down or come to a halt. Barely being able to keep up with the daily commits. The next blog post on math-anxiety is ready, but I am not ready to post it. Anything and everything else is overcome with a feeling of despair.

The next blog post will have to wait until the situation in Bangladesh stabilizes. Project announcements will take a hiatus. I need some time for recovery, we all do.

Take care of yourselves.
