It looks like a lot of cable… until you see what’s in the walls and the patchbay and console.. 😅

RIP Care. Our music community has suddenly and tragically lost a Canadian icon and all around good human wayyyy too young.

Welp … guess it’s time.

You know, I can deal with the landscaping company's over-zealous use of gas leaf blowers at our neighbour's place every week. I can even brush off that when we were looking for a landscape maintenance company and called and emailed them they never got back to us.

But when your crew decides to wander unannounced onto our property with the leaf blower and blow out the window wells (I suppose they were trying to be helpful...) perhaps you could hire people who might take a look see if the window is open first.

I really didn't want to spend the last 45 minutes cleaning leaves, dust, and a couple of desiccated frog corpses off of basically every surface and crack in the studio while choking on lingering 2-cycle exhaust fumes, but here we are....

At least it showed me where some cobwebs were hanging out. 🙄

How it started/How it's going

Found some old photos looking back through boxes in the storage locker the other day.

I've come a long way since my first "real" studio in the basement of my first apartment in Toronto in my first year at audio school.

I've actually still got some of the gear in these pictures. 😆

This came into the shop and now it’s never leaving.

Very clean ‘71 Vibrolux- been after one for years. Took the opportunity to trade out a ‘64 Pro (which also- amazing amp, but not THE tone for me) and add this to the studio’s arsenal.

First since 2019. Making the jump to silicon.

Have been hitting limits in sessions on the old 6 core Mini so it was time!

Console refurbishment this week. 1500+ capacitors and a few dozen switches to replace, a good cleaning, testing and recalibrating.

When we’re done it should be almost factory fresh!

This is how I bypass my 7060A sub now.

I very much enjoy my crappy modern Dymo embosser. Who doesn’t love a brand new thing that works worse than a 40 yr old thing. (But really it does look cool…)

Where Sound and Music Meet Education

The music industry has changed dramatically in the past two decades. Musical talent doesn’t even cover the price of admission to success as an artist. Turning music from a passion into a career at any level requires a far more diverse skill set today than it has in the past. Accounting, marketing, logistics, and event planning have always played a part in any musician’s career but today wearing all those hats isn’t just a ‘nice to have’, it’s a requirement, and self-production has become just as important. For an independent musician trying to build a career today it’s critical to have a basic working knowledge of the production process at the very least.

It may be that you want to follow the lead of artists like Imogen Heap, Zöe Keating, Owl City, Emitt Rhodes and others who’ve self-engineered hit albums; or you want elevate the quality of your own recordings and mixes for demos or pre-production. Perhaps you simply want to understand the recording process and workflow better to be a more active participant in the studio. In any case, YouTube videos and online forums are no substitute for hands-on learning in a real studio with an experienced engineer.

We are a studio first- a small, high quality, fully equipped private facility featuring a hybrid set-up combining the best of old-school analogue and modern digital equipment. With this setup we are able to not only produce high quality recordings, but also teach a variety of workflows that represent the range of production methods in use today. In our facility you will be able to learn the skills that make professional quality recordings in a relaxed one-on-one environment that’s been designed to foster creativity. Our instructor has over two decades experience in the audio industry, and more than a decade of teaching experience. We prioritize teaching fundamental concepts over specific software and gear, so that you can apply the skills learned no matter what your own equipment set-up looks like.

We welcome clients who are interested strictly in recording, or those who are just looking to learn production skills, or a mix of both. Both recording and lesson rates are set to be affordable for everyone, and we offer a discount to students enrolled in music focused programs in high school or post-secondary.
