formed in January 2016 from the merger of North Waterloo Farmers Mutual and Oxford Mutual. These two parent companies bring together a combined total of more than 250 years of experience serving rural Ontario’s insurance needs. OXFORD MUTUAL INSURANCE was formed as a result of an amalgamation of two farm mutual insurers in 1973. The roots of these two companies dated back to 1878 and were based in the rural Ontario communities of Oxford, Middlesex, Elgin and Perth Counties. Originally, policies were written focusing exclusively on fire insurance but over the years, the needs of the policyholder/owners changed substantially. Broader and different coverage was requested. Oxford Mutual continued to meet those needs with the assistance of the mutually owned Farm Mutual Reinsurance Plan Inc., and their mutual insurance trade association, Ontario Mutual Insurance Association. In 2015, following an approval vote by their mutual policy holders, Oxford Mutual merged with North Waterloo Farmers Mutual Insurance Company. NORTH WATERLOO FARMERS MUTUAL was established on June 9, 1874 when a number of farmers from the 3 northern townships of Waterloo, Ontario held a public meeting to form an independent farm mutual. The Company issued 200 policies in its first year and eventually expanded its operations into other counties. The philosophy of meeting the needs of the policyholders, understanding exposures and limiting potential for loss through prevention, had proven to be a simple and effective growth strategy. The directors, being farmers themselves, personally applied their knowledge and experience whenever possible. By 2014 North Waterloo Farmers Mutual Insurance Company was one of the largest insurers of farm property in Ontario, offering a variety of innovative insurance products with a continued emphasis on loss prevention. To honour the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, we wear our orange shirts today, gather to raise a flag, read the land acknowledgement, and take a moment of silence to remember survivors of the residential schools, as well as the children never returned home.
We acknowledge the lasting systemic harm caused by residential schools. By learning more about Indigenous traditions, we can better honour this land and help rebuild relationships between cultures.

Sarah Klatt is an award-winning underwriter who celebrated her 5-year anniversary with Heartland earlier this month.
Starting in a co-op position, Sarah first joined Heartland in our Finance department. Once here, learning more about the insurance industry piqued her interest in underwriting. In just a few short years, Sarah completed her CIP and CRM designations, held a role on our Personal Lines team, and is now a Commercial Auto Underwriter.
Her hard work has earned her Canadian Broker Network’s 2025 Underwriter of the Year award, as well as Insurance Business Canada’s 2026 Rising Star award for best young insurance professionals under 35.
We’re honoured to have Sarah on our team, and wish her a happy 5 years with Heartland!

Amie Vandevenne joined the Heartland team in 2021 as a Commercial Underwriting Specialist, bringing with her a wealth of commercial knowledge.
In her tenure here, she has contributed her skills and knowledge to the launch of multiple large-scale projects at Heartland that have had a positive impact on how we do business. Amie now holds a role on our Underwriting Solutions team, where she can further contribute to improving what Heartland has to offer.

THIS SUNDAY IS NATIONAL INSURANCE AWARENESS DAY
Promoted annually in Canada on June 28, its purpose is to remind individuals and businesses to review their policies and ensure they have coverage that's appropriate to their situation, and to be aware of what they are actually covered for.

For over a decade, Barb Reid has been an invaluable member of Heartland's commercial team as a senior underwriter. She has been a resource to colleagues and leaders alike, and a mentor to many less experienced underwriters.
Barb's work ethic and commitment is admirable and the relationships she’s developed with numerous brokers will leave a lasting legacy for us to carry forward.
