"Human Physiology: How many breaths does an average person take every day?"
Here is what Dr. Jahnke has to say in response to this question:
"According to Gurus and Wizards and Longevity Experts — slowing the breath has many health and longevity benefits.
However, the official number of breaths per minute, according to conventional science, is 16–20 / minute. So, averaging at 18…
Breaths per hour — 60 min X 18 = 1080.
Breaths per day - 24 hrs x 1080 = 12,960.
Breaths per year - 365 days X 12,960 = 4,730,400.
For a lifetime of 80 years - 80 yrs X 4,730,400 = 378,432,000
Practices like meditation, Tai Chi, Qigong, Yoga, can slow the breath to as few as 4–5 breaths a minute and typically this slows the heart rate as well.
The heart beats of a person who lives to 80 years would be 3,363,840,000. There is research that indicates that slowing heartbeats to 60 per minute has a positive influence on the parasympathetic / vagal component of the autonomic nervous system, increasing the vitality and sustainability of the telomeres - enhancing the long term capacity of the DNA to replicate cells. This reportedly increases the likelihood of extended healthy longevity."
