Kimberly: This quote inspires me because I believe now a dayys everyone gets lost in their thoughts, ‘Will I get hurt riding a roller coaster? Will this cost me money? What will others think of me? Will I get in trouble if I stand up for something I believe in? Will I get my heart broken?’ We get so lost in the future that we forget to live in the present. We forget to live in the moment. It is okay to make mistakes because they make great memories and experiences that we share with friends and family. We learn from our mistakes and it’s better than doing nothing.

Shaswati: This quote inspires me because it made me realize that you don't need tangible things in life to be successful. You can do something as simple as stepping out of your comfort zone for the first time and it would still be considered doing something great.

Q: What inspires you?
A: I realize that there are many faiths that people believe in, but there are also many people who do not believe in any beliefs like myself. Being a person of color, I felt that I was expected to believe in my faith and follow the “rules” of that faith. However, I am glad that I grew up with a family who never pressured me to believe everything about my religion. The one faith they asked me to believe in is my own, as in my own gut feeling. I was told to ask myself if I am going in the right direction or follow the path that I want to be following. Therefore, I think that it is great that people have different beliefs which shape who they are but I think the lack of faith following is just as important as someone who believes in a certain faith.

Verse: Dua of Yunus (A.S) repenting to Allah in the belly of the whale (21:87)
لَّا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
Jana: I take comfort in this Duaa. No matter the reason we might feel in despair, nothing can rival the almost absurdist tale of the prophet Younes (Jonah) finding himself in the belly of a whale. What we learn of this is as the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) too taught us, that a Muslim mustn't despair. That whale can represent any apparent impossibility in life. "Apparent" is the only thing that matters in the last sentence.

This year, instead of focusing on a specific verse from the Quran, we thought we would open up the floor and hear what inspires everyone. It could be a verse from your holy book, an inspirational quote or a figure that you look up to. Your answer can be written, auditory or an image; send your art to the IAW inbox and we will feature as many as possible in preparation for the upcoming festivities!
